Anyone about to talk to me about talking therapy?

Have just been referred after seeing the GP about compulsive overeating, anxiety, low body image etc etc etc. Is talking therapy like counselling? What does it involve? TIA

There are quite a few different types I think.

Does this help?

Have googled it for you, counselling is a form of talking therapy. The kind of things you will do will depend very much on your counsellor, they should explain how they work in your first session with them.

For instance mine does all sorts of stuff, like 'working creatively' e.g. drawing how I feel about something, which sounds really lame and daft, I thought I'd hate it but actually it's quite fun and very revealing. Dh says 'so what picture have you drawn today then love.' Haha funny guy!

She also does role play, for example talking to the empty chair and pretending it's this or that person - which I CANNOT do cos I feel sooo stoopid so we gave up on that one.

But mainly I waffle for an hour then go home. It isn't always easy, in fact it's maybe the hardest 'work' I've ever had to do, and I feel better for it.

I have huuuge anxiety, some eating issues, zero self esteem etc. You are not alone!

Thanks both of you, didn't expect anyone to answer so I went off to do other things Thanks for the link wobbegong, I'll have a read now. Dippy, thanks for your insight. The doctor mentioned CBT but only got referred on Wednesday so I'm probably in for a wait anyway. I would probably feel stupid talking to a chair too even though most of my conversations seem to be with inanimate objects lately
