Last night in the shower i thought i felt a lump under my rigt breast, it feels different to the left one and dp said he could feel a hard area there too.
I am due on my period and stopped bf 5 months ago so boobs changing again at the moment.
Should i just keep monitoring it till my period comes?

well i had to take dd to the docs this morning and she has chicken pox so while there i asked the doctor to check my breast instead of going back tomorrow, he has referred me to the breast clinic and i now have to wait for an appointment.
m glad i went, thank you all, im glad he has referred me for a proper check, but im also scared now as if there was nothing surely he would have told me nothing to worry about.
wait and see i suppose.

This thread has reassured me. I went to docs today with a small lump (am still BF my 7 month old). She thinks it's probably nothing but referred me to a breast clinic for an ultrasound. Am a bit worried but the experiences here make me feel a better.

I am sure that this is the case with you as well ILTC - it's just that some doctors (male?) aren't as reassuring in their manner as they want to be 100% certain before they give any opinions. Good luck.

i found a tiny lump last year. I could only find it when stood up ( i had no bath at the time and so checked myself when having a shower). I made an appt with my GP who couldn't find it but said i had lumpy breast tissue. He referred me anyway, as he was aware how worrying it was for me. I was told it would be 2 weeks to my appt at the clinic but actually it was 4 because i wasn't considered an urgent case. The consultant asked me to show him where it was (i had to sit up for this otherwise i couldn't find it), he then asked me to lay down and said yes he could feel it. He left me with the nursing staff and handed over to his colleague who did an ultrasound (no mammogram as at 33 i am too young) and they gave me a local anaesthetic to take a biopsy (this didn't hurt one bit, and i am a big wimp ), she took a sample and said as half the lump had come away it was probably a cyst. She then took a second sample and the lump disappeared completely on the ultrasound. It was a cyst.
The worst thing about it all looking back was that in a brand new, purpose built breast clinic the air con was on the blink and it was cold in the consultation room. Just what you want when you're lying prone on a hospital bed with your boobs out

CathW99 · 05/06/2009 19:57

I found a lump whilst pregnant and although I guessed it was probably just pregnancy changes I went to GP who referred me to breast clinic. THey gave me an ultrasound and checks during pregnancy and soon after and reassured me that it was most likely pregnancy tissue and they could certainly see no signs of anything on the scan. I'm booked for a mammogram once I stop breastfeeding but it has put my mind at ease. Chances are it's just your body changing after pregnancy and breastfeeding but I would go asap for reassurance and if it is anything more sinister the sooner you deal with it the better.

CathW99 · 05/06/2009 20:00

Also if the GP feels a lump regardless of how insignificant it seems I imagine they feel bound to refer you just in case so I wouldn't worry on that front.

nikki1978 · 05/06/2009 20:27

I had one 5 years ago just after having DD. It was a firm round lump by my armpit and I worried myself sick about it. The doctor thought it was fatty tissue but referred me as a non urgent case just to be sure. They gave me an ultrasound which showed nothing but they gave me a needle biospy anyway. It was just fatty tissue and it is still there to this day.

Did they say it seemed suspicious? If they thought it was you will get a quick appt (within 2 weeks). Just remember 9 out of 10 breast lumps are benign so the odds are in your favour.

ilovetochat · 06/06/2009 14:23

my appointment has come through for thursday, 1 week after my docs appointment so it seems quite quick to me, oh god.
i am 31 so does that mean im too young for a mammogram queenrolo? hadnt heard that before.
i have a bad feeling.

I had a similar thread in April as I found a lump under my arm.
That turned out to be a hair.
But the gp checked my breasts and found a lumpy bit in the other breast.
She asked me ot go back 2 weeks later, after my period.
It was awful having to wait.

I went back and she could still feel it though less so.
I was referred to clinic, and got an appt one week later. I was v v scared (had a friend same age who had breast cancer 2 years ago) and was given beta blockers for anxiety

On the actual day the staff were amazing, v caring and understanding. The consultant examined me and said it was nothing, just lumpy breasts . The relief!!! he also said if I was woriied in the future I could self refer. I was all ready for scan and biopsy, fearing the worst, so it was the best news ever!!

I think if you are under 35 you get a scan, rather than mammogram.

Try not to worry, though I know it is almost impossible. 9 out of 10 are fine; your age is in your favour too.

Good luck

ilovetochat · 06/06/2009 14:54

thank you.

when i went for my appt it was busy, my ex's nan had been the week before and sat in the waiting room for ages.

I think my appt took longer to come through because my local breast unit is very busy and understandably they deal with the most important cases first. My ex's nan for example had kept quiet about her lump and by the time she told someone it was so big they referred her straight for mastectomy. It may be that you have a bigger unit/less busy and so appt's are coming through quicker, so i wouldn't worry about that too much.

you will worry, that's only natural but i'm sure you will find that it is nothing to worry about. My lump was tiny, but the consultant did say that had i been bigger breasted (i'm an A cup) i probably wouldn't have noticed it until it was much bigger.

ilovetochat · 07/06/2009 13:56

thanks queenrolo, since i stopped bf at xmas my boobs have shrunk from massive to flat and therefore any lumps/ridges are easy to notice. our hospital is pretty good at quick appointments and being seen soon can only be a good thing cant it even if its bad news.
fingers crossed for thursday, will they tell me there and then or do i have to wait for results?

OP posts:
queenrollo · 07/06/2009 15:19

my biopsy was sent away to the lab and i got a phone call about a fortnight later to tell me everything was clear.
i was surprised they did it there and then, i was expecting to be examined and called back if i needed anything further doing but it really was so straightforward i was in and out in under 30 mins.
I was very bruised and tender for about a week after and have a tiny scar now where the biopsy needle went in.

slummymummy36 · 08/06/2009 00:32

Oh God I am going through all this YET again.
I know how worrying it is.

I first felt a lump a bout 6years ago. Was referred to the breast clinic and had an ultra sound. Horrible Dr asked me why I thought I may have cancer and told me that at 31 I was wasting hosiptal time!!!
Deep down I knew my GP had referred me but it knocked me for six and made me feel well embarrassed. That was Aberdeen.

We have since moved south and in March I plucked up the courage to see my GP about lump I had been aware of since August 2008! I was too scared to go, incase I was told off for wasting hospital time again. I actually cried when I told the GP how long I had known about this lump. I was referred to the Breast Clinic and seen within 15 days later. This clinic was run moreless the same (slightly different and alot friendlier than Aberdeen). I was examined. Then had to wait. Then scanned. Then had to wait. Then needle biopsy (surprisingly painless) then wait. Then go in for the results. All on the same day. Stressful but at least its all done on the same day. Thankfully I was given the all clear and told I have lumpy breasts. No explaination for it. Advised to buy well fitting bras. Cut down on coffee. Loose weight and take Evening Primrose and Star Flower oil with a high EPA{???). All of which I am doing (2 1/2 stone lighter already - LOL)!!

Well I have been doing all of that but have no discoverd a new lump on the same side but this time it is in my armpit as opposed to the last one in my breast. . Not sure what to do. I have no idea where I am in my cycle atm as my contraception failed 5/6 weeks ago and I had to take emergency contraception (MAP) which led me to bleed for 4 weeks. I dont know if I should wait for my next period or go to my GP now. It will be so embarrassing to have to go back to the breast clinic so soon!!

All the very best to everyone unlucky enough to have a lump BTW!

ilovetochat · 08/06/2009 13:46

slummy, i would go back, its better to waste nhs time (not that you are obviously) than waste precious time if you are ill. I hope you are ok and im sure the clinic would be happy to ckeck you again and hopefully put your mind at ease!

ilovetochat · 09/06/2009 14:11

ive been told they will probably do a scan and maybe a mammogram or needle biopsy depending what they think it is.
the money was split between the Prostrate cancer charity and national stroke association, they are closest to our hearts this last year.
All ready for your hols? Are you taking a carseat? Is your dd having a cot or bed? Does the pushchair count as baggage allowance? Just thinking ahead for when we go.
Have a good day shopping after your filling.

OP posts:
JeanPoole · 09/06/2009 15:15

we are not taking a car seat asa he have a coach transfer.
dd is having a cot, she's still in her cot at home
the pushchair is seperate they don't charge and it doesn't come off the baggage allowence.
but i'm taking a light one not the main quinny.

i'm nearly sorted with the things i/we need

ilovetochat · 09/06/2009 20:13

oh i hope you have a great time, is it your first time abroad with your dd? I bet she will love the pool as she is used to swimming isnt she. we go away to wales soon but id rather be in majorca.

OP posts:
JeanPoole · 09/06/2009 21:19

thanks we took dd last year when she was 1, to cala d'or also in majorca.
had a really wonderful time.
she was so good, she slept all the way there and home, she loved the beach and pool.
she loved the food, we kept her out till midnight! she would bounce on our knees to the music.
bit sad really the time is going so fast, as she was just a baby last year.

oh well can't stop time i guess.

i have a feeling she might be a bit harder this year though!.

have you taken your dd abroad before?
where do you call in on your cruise?
i fancy doing a cruise and stay sometime

wigglybeezer · 10/06/2009 10:13

Hi, ilovetochat, checking in to let you know how I've been getting on. Have just been back to GP for further check and he has referred me to the breast clinic , having a wee cry right now but will pull myself together and put the kettle on in a minute. GP didn't seem very worried, got the impression he was just being careful but still hard not to worry.

I have a horrible feeling the appointment will clash with our family holiday though, that will be a dilemma, fingers crossed I don't have to cancel.

Good luck with your appointment.

ilovetochat · 10/06/2009 15:35

hi wigglybeezer, i'm sorry for you, don't cry at least it will be checked properly, i'm going tomorrow morning to the breast clinic and i've been holding back the tears all day. I keep thinking too far ahead, like what if its cancer and i have to have treatment and something happens to me and dd is left or i have treatment and cant have more kids. i know i am rushing too far ahead and have to hope its good news but im so scared!
Phone the docs/clinic and tell them your hol dates and see if they can fit you in early.

Hi Jp, we didnt go abroad last year, havent been for 3 years. i hope dd sleeps on the plane.
the cruise stops at Spain, France, Italy and Tunisia. having a week at puerton Pollensa 1st.

ilovetochat-I had a breast lump in january. I eventually saw gp who referred me to breast clinic I was there within 4 days. It can be a long wait as they try and get all the results to you beofre you leave. I was examined by the consultant, sent for a mammogram, then had an ultrasound and a fine needle biopsy. They also did a core biopsy whilst I was there to prevent a recall. I got all of the results bar the core biopsy before I left and everything was very reassuring. It turned out to be a fibroid thingy and completely harmless.

Try and take somebody with you if possible. I didn't and was beginning to feel the pressure waiting for the results.

I am sure that it wil be absolutely fine- don't read anything into the fact that you have been referred, any cautious gp will refer a breast lump to the breast clinic-had I not been referred I would have sought a second opinion.

let us know how you go

chipkid · 10/06/2009 15:54

by the way-the biopsies did not hurt a bit-I was scared about that part and honestly I felt nothing. You will feel so much better having this looked at
