Part of this I have copied & pasted from another thread to save retyping.

I have posted several threads over the last week about DS - long story short - fever off and on since last Sunday, cough since last Thursday, tummy ache since Saturday - on which day me and DH came down with same virus apparently. Been to see GP now 3 times and out of hours doctor once. This happened a couple of hours ago:

I am so upset. A while ago DS sat on his potty and did a wee and poo and he stood up and the liquid was crimson red - blood. We took him and potty contents to GP - phoned first thinking they might want to come to us as we are clearly contagious but our bitch horrible evil GP said to come to her (she isnt horrible for that she is just always horrible)

Anyway she looked at it and said "oh yes, blood" and sent us away with some pots for him to pee and poo in, to drop off to the surgery tomorrow morning, results 3 days after that! I just dont feel like they are taking us seriously at all. I hate my GP. We all have a bad flu, it isnt getting better, now DS has peed blood and surely something else should happen. I am so upset. I just got home from GP and phoned NHS direct, they are about to call me back. I just dont know what to do.

Our area doesnt have an emergency care unit. So it is A&E or GP and GP is just bizarrely uninterested. But I know the flu advice is not to go to A&E, understandable! I will see what the NHS Direct nurse says when she phones back.

I really need someone to talk to me about this and give me some perspective so I will bump til someone sees it, sorry but I have never seen DS's wee like that it has really upset me after a week of illness & tummy aches to just be sent home.

I should say he did eat a couple of pieces of beetroot last night but he has eaten it before (without it turning his wee red) and it was around 7:30 last night and he has done many many wees since then. So I think it being caused by the beetroot.

--

Right just spoke to nhs direct nurse who said she thought the beetroot causing it was unlikely as it wasnt that much, and it was the better part of 24 hrs ago, the red was so dark crimson etc. She said we could take him to A&E now or wait and see what his next wee is like. Meanwhile he seems ok at the moment, he is playing outside with DH. His mood is one minute fine the next minute angry and throwing things and hitting which he hasnt done in ages. DH and I have the flu. What should I do?

flamingobingo · 18/05/2009 17:38

I would have said a&e too. Can someone else take him? Did you mention the flu to nhs direct?

TotalChaos · 18/05/2009 17:39

take him to A & E. re:flu -whoever takes him should be ubercareful with hygiene - try and sit away from people, wash hands (or I suppose antibac gel them would do) after coughing/blowing nose etc.

hereidrawtheline · 18/05/2009 17:42

I did tell nhs direct all about the flu they just said "yes there are lots of bugs going around that are terrible" and she said if his wee was bloody again to take him to A&E or if I preferred now. I just cant fucking believe how shit all this has been.

OP posts:
SusieDerkins · 18/05/2009 17:43

If his next wee is fine then I would get him to bed and make sure he's warm, has plenty of fluids blah blah (you know the rest!) and just wait for everything to take its course. (Ds2 and I had an awful chest infection that went on for 6 weeks.)

However, even if his next wee is fine it sounds like you will still be worried about him. Take him to A&E if it will put your mind at rest. Can one of you go with him and the other stay at home and rest?

hereidrawtheline · 18/05/2009 17:43

DH and I will both take him. I dont drive so DH has to and I refuse to let him go without me. If we go we will hand sanitise every few mins.

I dont have the bloody wee though GP put it in the toilet at the surgery.

OP posts:
TotalChaos · 18/05/2009 17:44

i feel for you, as you live in the sticks don't you, so you don't get much choice about care at all, at least in cities you can go down to the walk-in centre. given he may have blood in his urine, that's more serious than just having a bad fluey cold, so best to get it checked out now.

hereidrawtheline · 18/05/2009 17:44

So if it were all of you would you wait one more wee before going off to A&E?

OP posts:
hereidrawtheline · 18/05/2009 17:46

Thanks TC I am just so pissed off right now. I hate our GP so much and as I dont drive I just cant see how I can change to the one in the next village. And I just dont trust them. I cant believe she saw a bloody tupperware box full of bloody wee and just shrugged her shoulders. It was dark crimson red it wasnt even like flecks of blood in otherwise yellow wee.

OP posts:
SusieDerkins · 18/05/2009 17:46

If his next wee is fine will you still be anxious? If the answer is yes then go right now and take a pot with you so he can pee while you are waiting at the hospital. You're bound to have a long wait so you may as well start queueing asap!

TotalChaos · 18/05/2009 17:48

btw if you don't go down and end up sending samples off, have you been advised whether you need to put them in the fridge or not overnight (if you take them tonight I mean).

I wouldn't wait for the next wee; by the time it's the next wee it could be past bed time so even more upheaval for your boy

flamingobingo · 18/05/2009 17:48

If he's well in himself, and that's what NHS direct said, then yes, leave him until he wees again (well, don't if you feel you ought to take him enow, but that's what I would do).

hereidrawtheline · 18/05/2009 17:50

He is washing his hands now and its been an hour since he weed so he should go soon. I am going to for once wait and let him do one more wee. If it is bloody he is going. If its normal we will wait. It is what DH wants to do and he is normally extremely calm and I am the one afraid for DS's health so I will let his judgement guide this one.

hereidrawtheline · 18/05/2009 17:55

I am just overwhelmed with exhaustion going to go lie down while I wait for DS to wee while he and DH do dinner.

feel for you , not sure a trip to a=e will achieve much though. am concerned your gp didn't think your ds may have a urinary tract infection - tummy ache, temps, bloody urine would in my book = uti . in the end flu is viral and really paracetemol, fluids na drest is the only thing that can be done, nhs is right around my way i have had dozens of peopl ein last few weeks with vomiting, temps, diarrhea and generally feeling dreadful , seems ot last a week or so . I would advise you to get the next wee in a clean container ( old jam jar ideal) and take/ring your gp out of hours service. Explain temps, abdominal pain and blood stained wee and you want to have him and urine checked for a uti. agree oyur gp sounds iffy....

tiredsville · 18/05/2009 18:32

Ok, I have just googled beetroot and urine and apparently it is a veg quite notorious for turning urine red! Uncool hugs to you, try not to worry.

hereidrawtheline · 18/05/2009 19:15

thanks

he has done a wee that is a normal yellow colour. My confusion is only matched by my exhaustion!

I am googling beetroot/urine connection and found this but it calls it "pink" pee and this was blood crimson red. And also I dont know what the time frame for this should be - he ate it last night between 7 & 7:30 and did the red wee at 4 today - so 21 hours later and lots of wees in between. Any medical experts know how long it would have taken his dinner to show in his urine if indeed it was beetroot? I need to know!

bumping in the hope someone who knows about wee will come along

OP posts:

OP posts:
hereidrawtheline · 18/05/2009 20:40

I am going to sleep soon I feel so drowsy its unreal. Was really hoping someone who knew about wee would come along before I pass out!

OP posts:
FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 18/05/2009 20:40

A UTI/stone can cause haemateuria but there would be other symptoms with this, abdominal pain, fever etc.

I'd be inclined to say it was the beetroot. It would take a while for it to go through as he wouldn't be weeing at night. Make sure he has plenty to drink.

Re: flu, have you all got headaches aswell? When did you last have your gas appliances checked?

hereidrawtheline · 18/05/2009 20:42

oh x posts thank you

um... not terribly headachey no. He has been in a foul horrible mood randomly and complaining of tummy ache. And hot flush sweaty face then it passes.

I am getting really tired though will have to go to bed soon. DS is in bed now.

OP posts:
FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 18/05/2009 20:45

Did the GP do a dip test on the wee? Blood shows up as protein. Beetroot wouldn't show up at all.

Gas checks?

blinks · 18/05/2009 20:50

it's worth bearing in mind that children often get tummy pains with viruses due to glands swelling in the stomach area.

hereidrawtheline · 18/05/2009 20:52

no GP didnt do anything, just gave us some bottles for him to wee in and return. I just want to know, I want to know if it was blood or beetroot. Sounds silly doesnt it! But you know he is my baby. He isnt even 3 yet. If that much blood was coming out of his body I want to know.

The boiler was serviced fully a couple of months ago.

OP posts:
FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 18/05/2009 20:58

It's unlikely to be blood to be honest, even with kidney problems there are alot of other symptoms. Do take in a sample to be sure though, they can tell right away. Blood shows up as protein when a dip test is done, beetroot doesn't.
