Help! IBS and breastfeeding

I feel shockingly awful. First flare up of IBS for over a year. Nausea, runs and stomach pain. My usual remedies of pepto bismol and alka seltzer are off limits as am bf a 3 month old baby. Can anyone give me some advice on relieving the symptoms? I can't even sleep I feel so grim.

peppermint tea? ginger tea? both can help.

Do you know what set it off, because if you do then try to avoid it again; if you don't then just try to limit wheat and/or dairy to small amounts.

I have heard that eating "slippery greens" i.e. cooked spinach, etc. can be very soothing to the intestine. I have a friend with ulcerative colitis (different thing I know but similar symptoms) and she swears by it. Oh, and she stays away from tomatoes as much as possible.

Thank you. Ginger tea seemed to help last night, and a very hot bath. Nausea and runs over but I think my stomach is in constant spasm. Am desperate to avoid IBS drugs as will mean the end of bf. Anyone else please??

could try colpermin over the counter at boots its just peppermint oil i think
peppermint tea is very soothing
im on merbevine tabs but like you siad you didnt want to take these -they do stop the spasms

if you can afford it, try reflexology - I have know it work very well for IBS.

Probiotics (solgar advanced multibillion is a good one)
you could try some slippery elm, it appears to be safe in pg and bfing, very good for spasmodic runny IBS
avoid yeast, sugar, wheat, dairy to avoid triggers
get as much sleep as you can, IBS is often triggered through adrenal exhaustion so nap when baby naps - put yourself first for a bit if you're not already where sleep and rest is concerned
Definitely peppermint tea, fennel is also good, as is chamomile
tummy massage with some peppermint oil

I took aloe vera gel every day for 3 years and never had a flare up.

I would highly recommend it. You can buy it at Holland and Barratt or on the internet (google Forever Living Products - I use the one in the yellow bottle).

I am current breastfeeding and suffering from IBS, I am trying to follow the low FODMAP diet and it really helping but am not sure if I can continue with it as I love dairy. Currently on mobeverine tablets which is helping a lot. I was just wondering if low FODMAP diet will be good for my baby? Thanks for reading.
