Pain and numbness in side of neck and head, what could this be?

Can anyone recognise these symptoms?

Around 3 days ago, my friend had some pain in her shoulder, that felt like a strained muscle. By the following day, this had moved to her neck. As she was drying her face, heard a heard snapping sound behind her ear, and now she has pain in the side of her head, neck and shoulder. Her ear and the side of her head feel numb.

She has been to the doctor, and was given a pain relief gel only. She's currently taking ibuprofen, as she has to work.

maybe a trapped nerve

I wondered about a migraine, but we had sort of ruled that out, becuase it started in the shcoulder.

We also wondered about the trapped nerve, but I know nothing about them, so I was hoping that someeone here would have more knowledge about what it's like!
