Anyone got hypothyroidism? How did you find out?

Hiya

Have been feeling a bit strange in the last few months and wondering if it's hypothyroidism.

Have been really scatty (locked keys in car twice in 3m,)tired but getting plenty of sleep, am starting to get overweight (although have been overeating the last fortnight which isn't helping), I get really frezing at bedtime, thought I had PMT but have been watching my cycle and can't see any hormonal reason for it, lifeless hair for first time in years, not quite depressed but find myself staring into space and haven't been able to read a book for months which is not me. My mum has it and I had a baby 8m ago which can also be a trigger apparently (before you say 'of course you're tired' he is the easiest baby you could imagine and all this has been since life has settled down.)

Anyway, am a bit nervous of seeing GP and being fobbed off as hypochondriac so would be really grateful for some diagnosis stories.
Thanks in advance.

i have had various thyroid problems, mine started as overactive, and like you i felt like i had so much wrong with me, but at the same time nothing really wrong, that the doctor would just think i was making it up.
when i went to the gp i was surprised at just how common thyroid problems are, gps dont think you are mad after all! The diagnosis is just a blood test, if i were you i would just go and ask, and put your mind at ease.

I put on lots of weight, was cold all the time, had no energy

I didn't realise there was a problem as it was a gradual decline but went on holiday and my mum's best mate was worried and convinced something v wrong so went to GP

My thyroid was producing no thyroxine, they were surprised I wasn't much more ill tbh

Yes it can be triggered by pregnancy, and especially if there is a family history. Sometimes it'll right itself again, or it can end up a lifelong thing. Go and ask the GP for a blood test because the treatment is very effective and if it is your thyroid you'll feel loads better quite quickly on the meds.
