My ds has been really grizzly and he has been batting at his ear. He doesnt have atemp, the ear isnt red, no fluid or discharge, he has long periods 9as long as he is being cuddled) where he is ok. Is it likely to be an ear ibfection, I dont think so but would hate him to be in pain and not do anything. Should I get him checked out?

Yes get him checked for ear infection. Also how old is he? Teething can cause ear ache.

Teething is a possible explanation then. But still get a quick check at GP to rule out ear infection or other causes.

ok, he has an appoint at 3 this afternoon, it is now 12.45 here. he has had a feed YAY and some pamol. anything else I can do to help him, he desperately needs sleep, put him down after the feed but it doesnt sound hopeful.
