Embarrassing question TMI Alert!

Does anyone know what it means to have mucus with poo. The poo is rather strong smelling but otherwise normal looking and well formed, but there was clearly mucus attached and my bum was wet when wiped.

Oh and I know it is Friday evening, but no this is not a bum sex thread. In other words, please no piss taking and no I have not had bum sex!

Please advise. I am too scared to google.

Sorry I don't know the answer but this happened to me a few times too . I'll watch this thread with intrigue

I frequently have mucus with my poo.
It is normal providing you are otherwise fine and there was no blood.

morningsun · 24/04/2009 20:27

well I think there can be different causes such as inflammatory bowel disease, infection etc
How old are you and do you have other symptoms like pain, weight loss or blood loss,or anaemia?

rempy · 24/04/2009 20:28

Just normal.

The rectum is lined with a very soft fluffy inner lining (epithelium) which makes mucus so that when you go it doesn't hurt your bum hole.

It's a natural lubricant.

Somedays you make a bit much, so you are aware of it when you wipe.

It can also be yellow.

Thanks Rempy, I've had IBS and Piles for years (pre-children) so always assumed it was kind of connected.

Mayaisk - When my IBS is really bad I'm running for the toilet and it's very noticable then lovely subject!

Mayiask · 24/04/2009 20:33

Well when I said it was clear, I meant it was not bloodied. Actually, I would say it was opaque, whitish, like a snotty nose.

I don't have any weight loss, blood loss or anaemia. I haven't been feeling hungry today and my stomach feels a bit heavy, but I don't feel ill and I am not in pain.

It sounds normal - I have it too sometimes

Mayiask · 24/04/2009 21:22

Thank you. I feel reassured though I now have indigestion so perhaps there is something going on.
