Any tips on relieving BACK PAIN???

I was recently diagnosed with Adult onset Scoliosis (curvature of the spine to me and you!). X rays show that the curve is not severe enough to warrant a rigid back brace (thank god)so Doc advised a firm back/lumbar support.
It's all well and good helping to ease the pressure but I need some help on managing the sharp, twingy, shotting pains without resorting to painkillers most of the time.

Any help??
