How do you tell is the child has any internal bleeding? There is a scraped imprint of a bike handlebar on the soft part of her tummy above the bellybutton. She is 10.

Well the internal bleeding would presumably show as bruising - is there any? If you're worried, call NHS Direct or see if the GP can see her.

You can only tell if there's internal bleeding with a scan. It's normal for the BP to fall which happens very quickly, the patient would be pale, clammy, fast pulse, belly distended. Internal bleeding can become life threatening within minutes so it's best to get her checked over, take her to A&E. The GP can't do much if there is any bleeding. NHS direct should tell you to take her to A&E.

Hmmm, reading this, have rung GP!
No clammy/distended tummy, but very tender.
Thanks for advice, folks.

Hope she's OK.

Dr will see her this pm, she does NOT want to go, but people keep telling me about slow bleeding, etc....so she's going! Might update later.

any news?

meltedmarsbars · 20/04/2009 21:13

After a good poke and prod, gp thinks lucky escape - there is awful scrape and handle-bar-end shaped mark on her stomach, tenderness and bruising around but no sign of worse inside.

Moral of story? dont have 14 kids on bikes in garden at one time!!
