On Friday he woke with a chest infection

He is being treated at Papworth for recurrent chest infections plus being investigated for a nasty bug & we knew he shouldn't take his emergency ABs as they could retard the growth of the nasty bug & he would have to do all the tests for it again.

So we rang Papworth - no answer
So we rang NHSdirect to be told we would have to decide what to do ?
So we rang papworth on a different number explained it to reception & spoke to the on call chest dr

Who said "you should have 1g ABs but the locum will only give you 500mg 3 times a day for 2 week"
So I phone the out of hours & explained it all to the receptionist & the locum rang me back
"Of course you can have 1g.....go & collect from Boots"

So we went to Boots - who would't give us 1g "must be a very odd chest infection - they don't ive 1g 3 times a day for that....are you sure?" rang Papworth where poor duty DR agreed that 500mg was OK

DH rather happy as 1g will kill his insides

Rang Papworth today, to update & confirm......& we have to go tomorrow to get 2 weeks of 1g 3 times a day

Poor DH

Maybe you had to be there

We collected them this afternoon

Apparently the pharmacist at Boots was wrong

singyswife · 15/04/2009 16:26

Oh dear poor dh. Hope he gets better soon. How annoying for you to get such conflicting advice

KatyMac · 15/04/2009 16:30

I had thought I was talking to myself

Thanks for speaking to me

He is on 1g of amoxycillin 3 times a day (for 2 weeks)

He is annoyed as his tummy will be very upset

I have seen ppl on 2g three times a day

TheMadHouse · 18/04/2009 17:14

I feel for him and go. I have just some off mega doses of doxyclyline and it made me feel pants.

Before that I was on IV vancomycine and amother one - it was like putting domestos in my system.

How about going to a health food shop and getting some tablets to help his tummy - sorry I can not remember the name - I am having a forgetful moment

TheMadHouse · 18/04/2009 17:15

Asodophylis (sp} I knew I would remember as soon as I posted.

You need to keep it in the fridge

KatyMac · 18/04/2009 21:03

Really Tink - that makes it odder that the pharmisist wouldn't give hime 1g 3 times a day

I am after some probiotics for his tummy but I have been tol to get the ones you keep in the fridge

I am on 1g 3x a day for Recurrent mastitis. My insides aren't great. What is the stuff you keep in the fridge???

CharCharGabor · 18/04/2009 21:24

Acidophilus, you can get it in Holland and Barretts. I used it for DD and me when we were on abs and it really helped.

KatyMac · 18/04/2009 21:48

I've been reading & the ones in H&B are good - the fridge stuff is old info

You need one with 2/3 different types of bacteria apparently

This was IV dose, this guy I nursed was on flucloxacillin 2g four times a day and amoxycillin 2g three times a day. Must have been a major infection, but I do not recall him having major side effects.

KatyMac · 19/04/2009 18:25

DH had even more mega doses (in IV) than this one when he was in Papworth last year - but I don't think it was that much

I think it was 1.5g 3 times a day
