The dr found a mass in one breast 2 weeks ago and I had to go back today, after my period.

She can still feel it and so has referred me ot breast clinic for a scan.

I have also been given beta blockers for panic attacks as not coping v well with anxiety.

She has said she doesn't think it is sinister but is referring me to double check.
Would she say this just to reassure me?

Not sure how I will wait for 2 weeks.

You are being seen really quickly, which is the most important thing.

Most lumps are benign, so keep focussing on that.

Good luck to you. I know how scary it is.

messymissy · 14/04/2009 12:02

Littlearch - you will cope - I have been referred three times in the last few years, the two weeks is the standard referral time, it seems like the most agonising wait but the time will pass - on the third occasion I rang each morning to see if they had had a cancellation - I was lucky and got seen after 5 days.

The first time it was a lump - happily benign but had to be removed surgically.

the second and third time, it was cysts which had to be drained under a local, so take hope that not all masses are sinister and you are in the best hands, they will treat you quickly and the staff are usually very kind and sensitive.

Good luck and try very hard not to worry.

littlerach · 14/04/2009 12:10

Thank you.

She called it a fibrodeama (sp).
Is that like a cyst?
Would i need it removed if benign?

I am trying v hard not to google so you are all being very helpful answering me.

littlerach-I know how you are feeling, same thing happened to me a few yrs ago.
The wait is terrible.have you taken the betablockers.Try and relax ,the chances are great that it is a benign firbroadenoma and you will be fine.
Mine was nothing ,I had strange rash on my nipple ,was called back twice which was terrifying.

Take care and think positive.

messymissy · 14/04/2009 13:11

I was over 40 so it was standard procedure to remove the lump, under 40 i think they usually leave well along - but may depend on the health authority. It was very quick - day surgery under general a.

The cyst is a fluid build up - like filling a balloon - which has to be drained, not too sure what fibrodeama means?! why not make another appointment with your gp and have another chat. Don't google, you will only make yourself more anxious.

MIAonline · 14/04/2009 13:17

2 members of my close family have had suspect lumps, went to GP and got referred. One appointment came through in the same week and she thought the worse and assumed it was so quick beacause the GP was worried. In the 2nd case it came through the same day, again panic set it!

Both members of my family were fine and both were nothing serious, sorry can't remember exact details but know they needed no further treatment.

IMO, they don't say things to reassure you anymore and they seem to be more realistic rather than reassuring so I would take it as a good sign that your GP said that. Easier to say than follow though I know!

Thank you all.

I had a breast lump a few years ago. I was terrified, convinced that my children would grow up without a mother. I felt the lump myself, but was sure the dr would say there was nothing there...she didn't and referred me for a biopsy. I went on my own as I felt I'd deal with it better, and lo and behold, it was nothing. Just a normal breast lump and nothing to worry about at all!!! It's the worst feeling in the world isn't it? I'm sure you'll be fine. Good luck. x

littlerach · 14/04/2009 16:46

That's the thing.
I went as Ihad a lump under my left armpit. It turned out tobe a gland.
She checked both breasts whilst there and found this mass in the othet one.

I can't feel it.
She says it has shrank a lot since first visit, so presumes it is hormonal?

I have been under the breast clinic for 6 months after finding a lump.
Initally the thought it was a cyst but couldn't drain it. It is a fibroadenoma(otherwise called a breast mouse as they are mobile, it is a benign mass of hardened breast tissue)
I have also been diagnosed with fibrocystic breast disease, I form breast cysts which then harden and become fibrotic, hence still being under the breast unit - all lumps need to get checked and I seem to get them every 3 months.

I am sure you will be fine, if you have any questions I will try to answer them.

littlerach · 14/04/2009 20:36

Thank you norks.

Have you had the "mouse" removed?

OP posts:
norksinmywaistband · 14/04/2009 21:49

No because of the nature of the fibrocystic disease I will keep getting them appearing and that would mean lots of surgery and resultant scar tissue so they are leaving them and monitoring regularly.
As I understand it they tend not to remove under 40

littlerach · 15/04/2009 08:04

I hope the fact that mine has shrank is a good thing?

OP posts:
norksinmywaistband · 15/04/2009 08:22

If it has shrunk, then a cyst would be the most likely, Fibroadenomas afaik do not dissapear and anything more sinister would grow or stay the same

subtlemouse · 15/04/2009 08:41

If they seriously think it is cancer, they act much quicker than waiting for a two week appointment. My friend was seen the same day .

BlaDeBla · 15/04/2009 09:36

Please don't start worrying about something you don't know about! Really, if there's something wrong, they will give you all the information you need. Until then, hold tight!

littlerach · 15/04/2009 09:41

I am finding it v hard to keep it together.

I keep having terrible nightmares and worst case scenarios.

I'm off to breast clinic tomorrow first thing in the morning. Then in the afternoon to Well Woman clinic for a smear test.

I look at it the same way I do when I had to go for a LEEP procedure on my cervix for CINII/III: if there's anything there, I'd rather it's caught early doors.

Exactly, Bla!

I have terrible problems with anxiety and depression.

But you know, it's a beautiful day here. That's a rarity and if there IS something siniser, I don't want to have wasted this day.

loopylou6 · 15/04/2009 11:29

rach, if it has shrunk then you will be fine, nasty things do not shrink all by themselves
