Mirena Failure!

susanmt · 18/04/2003 18:51

Well I have posted on the pregnancy thread but thought I would put something here as well. Having been the biggest fan of mirena it has let me down - I'm about 6 weeks pregnant! It is a bit of a shock and is going to take a little bit of getting used to (to say the least) but I thought you would like to know! Don't worry - I looked it up, this is a failure in the realms of 1:10000. Typical it should happen to me.

Goodness - I have finally booked my appointment for the mirena coil & now I am terrified - how did you know you were pregnant? because I thought bleeding/periods stops altogether doesn't it? Now I'm panicing - but sending you best wishes (and thanks for being honest).

Gosh, Congratulations susanmt I hope its not as bad as all that for you - having your mind made up for you with your next one. If its a girl you'll have to call her Mirena.

Hope mines abit more reliable!

ScummyMummy · 19/04/2003 20:59

Hope this is not terrible news, Susanmt. (Would be v peeved if my coil let me down this way.) Congratulations

mears · 19/04/2003 21:18

Susanmt - was it a mirena failure or an insertion failure? (of the coil I mean)
I read another post that it was found low in the cervix at your coil check.
Hope you have got your head round it all - just think how confident you will be this time. You will probably be able to enjoy this pregnancy and baby so much more (kidney stones permitting).
Best wishes, mears.

susanmt, again, congratulations.
I heard rrecently the mirena coil was more effective than female sterilisation.
Is this still true?

saphire5 · 19/04/2003 23:28

Congratulations Susanmt, how did you know you were pregnant as i thought you had absent periods with the mirena! And has your news sunk in yet, they say everything happens for a reason, it was meant to be.Hope your feeling well...

OK, went back to GP this morning and told her. She's surprised too.
What happened is that my coil had slipped down somehow and was sitting with its end poking out of my cervix. I had had a couple of months of spotting after a year of no periods but had put it down to cutting down on breastfeeding mucking around with the old hormones! At my coil check this week I mentioned I thought I could feel it and so she got out the speculum and gloves and had a look - and could see the end! As she is a coil fitter she pulled it out for me, told me to use additional contraception in the meantime and to come back next week for a new one, as she didn't have any in the practice.
But there was just the is feeling at the back of my mind .... I've been really tired, I had to stop breastfeeding ds a couple of weeks ago as my milk totally dried up, and was feeling a little queasy. So I did a test.
THe doc explained that because the coil was low in the cervix it wasn't releasing its hormone correctly, which allowed me to ovulate. It had been put in right and showed up in place on a kidney scan I had in December, so it has slipped since then - GP is going to research it but we have a strong family history of fibroids which might have something to do with it.
It hasn't sunk in yet. I'm sheellshocked, but dh is delighted. I referred to it as an 'accident' today and he went all huffy on me. Said it was a gift, not an accident etc. I'm just scared and worried as I had a very bad time with ds, bad kidney problems throughout the pregnancy.
So I'm going for a scan in a week or two to date it, and have been referred back to my kidney doctor for a checkup and to look after them.
I'll keep you posted.

Congratulations

oh wow - congratulations - hope dh's enthusiasm is infectious & you feel better about it & your kidneys are ok. Looking forward to you joining the November/December thread (I guess you'll be in this bracket)

SoupDragon · 20/04/2003 14:21

Congratulations!

Hope you recover from the shock soon

tigermoth · 20/04/2003 15:38

Hope you get used to the news and stay healthy. I have a coil, too, and know how totally stunned I'd be if a pregnancy test was positive. I do know of someone who gave birth to both her daugher and her coil together.

It's great that your dh is so happy about your news. That must make things easier for you.

Marina · 20/04/2003 19:45

Congratulations, susanmt. Hope the anxieties over your kidneys and your PND previously are outweighed by the pluses soon!

Frieda · 20/04/2003 21:42

Congratulations susanmt! Must have been a huge shock, but great that dh is so positive about it. Hope everything goes really well once you get used to the idea.

clucks · 20/04/2003 22:24

Congratulations, hope all goes well for you.

JanZ · 21/04/2003 09:13

Hope everything goes well for you Susanmt. Would your dh be as huffy if you called it a "happy accident"?!

oxocube · 21/04/2003 17:26

oxocube · 21/04/2003 17:27
