I have just started on some stuff as the GP thinks I have IBS.

I am going for blood tests and a scan to check out other problems.

Hope you get some advice. I posted a while ago but don't think anyone who saw it could help much. Thanks to my one reply though.

candyfluff · 12/04/2009 19:55

thanks muffin i have had movicol and buscopan in the past cant remember if they worked
im thinking choclate makes it worse ? what about you ?

Bread is what I have noticed is the worst thing for me.

MrsTittleMouse · 12/04/2009 19:59

I used peppermint oil capsules, which gave me relief, I think that peppermint tea is good too, but I didn't like it as much. I cut down on foods with a lot of fat and cut down on caffeine - caffeine I think was particularly bad for me.

I also found that it was very much stress related. Trouble is, of course, that it's not that easy to cut out stress! Hope you find something to ease your symptoms, it can be really grim, can't it?

candyfluff · 12/04/2009 20:16

yes its not nice at all
thought id left that all behind
will get some peppermint stuff tomorrow
i love bread
and i find if i have milk on cereal for breakfast it upsets my stomach
i mean what other options are there for breakfast when im trying to cut out milk and bread

Scrambled egg with grilled tomatoes?
Would yoghurt be gentler on your stomach?

candyfluff · 12/04/2009 20:27

yeh maybe ,what are crumpets made from (thicko)
cant stand cooked food for breakfast though

If you think you have IBS.. go to the Gp and make sure it's IBS. They will do this by ruling out everything else out.
If you are like me.. you will have huges amounts of bloods taken, and tested for everything, cameras up your bum and down your throat, more bloods, scans, more bloods.. various scripts for pills and potions to help ease the symptoms.. while they work out what is causing it, you will see a nutritionalist who will cut out different foods, in a controlled manner to see if any of it is having an effect.

HTH .. ie go to the gp and get it checked out rather than cutting foods out of your diet.. when your not quite sure what's going on.

Bread definitely doesn't work for me.

Is there anything else I can have? I am really into cheese on toast atm.

littlerach · 13/04/2009 14:15

I avoid cheese as it makes my stomach bad.
I have been slwoly re introducing it, mainky goats cheese.
Awkward as I am veggie.

I also find that simply not eating too much helps massively. My meals are much smaller.

Stress is terrible for it. I take peppermint oil capsukes and rescue remedy when stressed and this has helped.

Drink lots of water.

notcitrus · 13/04/2009 14:18

Peppermint tea and lots of bioactive yoghurt helped me a lot (I had a physical cause as well), plus reducing obvious enormous stresses.

What triggers mine is fat - deep pan pizza, chinese or bad indian takeaways, milk chocolate and icecream. And possibly caffiene, but if I was drinking lots of caffiene/eating cheap chocolate, I was probably very stressed so hard to tell.

Porridge for breakfast? Oats or muesli, add milk, microwave for 2 min.

Mine cleared up totally when I was pregnant but that might be overkill as a solution!

candyfluff · 14/04/2009 09:51

thanks for all you suggestions ,its been bad the last 2 days so have made an appointment to see my gp this afternoon
the pain is awful ,really bad cramps then i have to dash off for huge amounts of poo ,i really have no idea where its all coming from

My triggers are bread, fat, caffeine and alcohol all my favourites then. I dont know if it is recommended but I use immodium when it is really bad, just to get the diarreaoh under control.

triplets · 18/04/2009 23:10

How did you get on Candy? I went to my gp six months ago for similar reasons, she just examined me and said, its ibs, all the stress you are under, take some colofac. It didn`t go away, so I have insisted on tests and am awaiting a ct scan and barium enema result. Of course I am half scared they are going to find something, on the other hand I need to know what it is, its very sore on my right hand side with bouts of constipation. My poor DH is battling cancer atm and with triplets its kinda hard. Hope you get on ok.

candyfluff · 20/04/2009 09:02

hi triplets ,wow you sound stressed to me ,ibs is made worse by it .
i went to gp who examined me and it did hurt when he felt my stomach ,he gave me colofac which helped for a few days and now its not really doing anything ,after i eat i get awful pain low down in my stomach and i need to dash to the toilet ,not diareaoh but alot of 'normal' poo ,way too much it does make me wonder where its all coming from !!
when i dont eat its just a low tummy ache and bad back ? dont know if the bad back is related? i have been drinking lots of peppermint tea its nice and i think it does sothe my tummy ,have you tried it .
last time i had it they wanted to do the camera up the bum thing but i was too scared and after a while all the ibs symptoms went away and this has been 5 yrs and its all started again.
feeling very fed up coz i a way it controls what i do ,dont want to be far from a toilet.
do you find its worse at the time of the month ?

Meglet · 28/04/2009 11:06

Has your gp referred you to a dietician? I was told to cut back on fibre (no more brown bread ), lots of fruit + veg banned, its known as a low residue diet as it digests easier. And no tap water , only mineral water. Stress always makes mine worse, I eat on my own most days as eating with the dc's make me really ill. And despite not having much fibre I still go to the loo about 3 times a day (I'm never bunged up), but I rarely get pain now. Keep pestering your gp to see a dietician as it should do some good.
