Please tell me I'm not dying! (Hard lump on neck)

I'm seeing GP tomorrow, but I have a hard, painless lump on the left side of my neck, round towards the back. About 3 inches below my ear, round towards the back but still on the side, iyswim.

Tell me it's a knotted muscle! It goes away if I put my head right back, but seems to stick out more if I tilt my head over to the right.

I Googled. I also read the John Diamond columns which all started with a neck lump.

About 2 weeks ago, an ENT doctor examined my neck as I thought I might be dying - if there was anything bad there, he'd have felt it, wouldn't he? They know the places to grope around in, don't they?

Tell me it's a knotted muscle. I do carry a lot of tension in my neck.

I took DS to the doctor when he was 6mths old as he had a lump in this position and I was convinced he had something dreadfully wrong with him.

GP asked me if he'd had chicken pox yet and when I said no replied "Oh, I expect he will". The spots came up within 48 hours.

Its a swollen gland, honest!

Do u feel well other than the lump?

Sorry Twinkle...i remember the doc sayin it...he also said 99% of these things are benign!!!!

It's in such an odd place... I normally get glands under my jawbone swelling up. This is right, right round towards the back of my neck.

But I will take your words for it, and only give away a few of my treasured possessions until after doc appointment tomorrow.

Maybe it's always been there and you've only just noticed it.

Prosecco · 08/04/2009 22:49

I have had it. Gp said it was infected follicle and prescribed antibiotics.

BEAUTlFUL · 08/04/2009 22:55

thanks all of you.

I want to end this chat now before someone comes here and posts, "Ah yes. My late best-friend had this," or similar!

I too have one on the side of my neck that's about the size of a pea, it's been there for a over a year, doesn't hurt. My Dr says so long as they don't get bigger not to worry, sometimes once they've been inflammed they don't go back down completely. Mine fluctuates between a bean and a petit pois depnding on wether my sinusis are bunged up or my allergies are playing up.

I have a lump or tight muscle knot don't know. It is on my neck on side but little under hair line so on the backside. It swells and goes down on and off for about 4 to 5 months. No other symptoms at all. I have tense neck and pain. The lump is tender to touch. Please give me some idea. I will call Doctor tomorrow to get appointment. Thanks.
