My coil strings are disappearing - does it matter?

Hi everyone,

I have a copper coil. When it was fitted - about 10 weeks ago - the strings were about 2 inches long probably. They were on the long side if anything and easy to check, although I was a bit paranoid about pulling them out.

I checked them yesterday and they were really short - perhaps about 2 mm out of my cervix. Does this matter? Is it on the move and about to fall out?! Or does it maybe change with your cycle?

As a bit of background I am still breastfeeding - DD was exclusively bf until 3 weeks ago and is now going much longer between feeds. Could it be possible my periods are returning and its doing something?

I also had some odd spotting last night - was like small dark red clots but only a little bit. Over the last few weeks I have had a bit of spotting - mainly oldish blood which lasts a few hours and then goes. Yesterday I had a pain in my side similar to ovulation - could it have been that and it moved? Will it come back down with my period?

I know I need to have it checked if Im worried but just hoped someone had a similar story to tell.

Thanks you

Thanks I think I will go get it checked - am a bit freaked out now lol! I did wonder about the effect of breastfeeding - I had a mirena fitted at 11 weeks post partum and that fell out within a week. This one has made it 10 weeks I suppose before possibly attempting an escape in the other direction!

hi, i too have a copper coil and cant find the strings, mine was fitted when i had my six week check after my 4th baby, he will be 3 in may. i am now having very sore boobs and they are swollen, has anybody else had this and if so what caused it? am getting bit worried as i have had coils fitted before and had no side effects....help

pinkwitch, you may want to start a new thread, this is an old one.

Do you have a local fpc who can scan/check for you? You shouldn't have side effects with a copper coil, well not sore boobs and the like. That sounds hormonal to me. Where in your cycle are you?

My GP told me not to bother looking for the strings as they often soften and 'curl up' around the top of your cervix. He said he got lots of women coming in in a panic thinking it had gone astray. As for the boobs, I get this before my period (sometimes) but no other time
