How to find out when my surgery will be...

I am due an anterior repair for a prolapse and the consultant told me a couple of months ago it would be "around May".
As yet, I've not been contacted re:pre op or surgery dates and am getting a bit worried as I need to put childcare into place, arrange work (I'm self employed and have strong commitments to clients) and also sole carer to disabled mum who will need respite.

Tried secretary to consultant twice and first time she was on annual leave, yesterday answer machine which told me she only works mon and wed.

is there another dept that might be able to help? woudl it be Admissions perhaps?

TIA x

I would phone your GP and ask them to chase it up, explain you haven't heard anything.
Alternatively you can contact admissions who may be able to help but if you haven't had any consultation already maybe not. The secretary is the best person to look into it, just keep trying her and leave messages.

THanks for your reply Dilly, I will try the sec again next week. Last consulation I had with hospital consultant was about 6 weeks ago so I thought I'd have an op date by now which is why I'm frustrated really.

I would def try the consultants sec on Monday. She will be the only person who will know where you are on the list.

I second speaking to the consultants secretary. I'd also mention to her that you have lots of care arrangements to get into place - it'll help them (and you) to get a date scheduled that is mutually convenient.

What they all said! Just keep calling, nicely and politely, until you get a proper answer.

I just happened to call one day and got told the date over the phone - so who knows when they had actually allocated me the date - but I didn't get it in writing until 10 days or 2 weeks later! So keep calling....

In the end the date was only finally confirmed 2 weeks beforehand - the op is in school holidays when partner away and I am self-employed too. What a pain in the jacksy!

A friend who works sits on a local NHS Trust committee says the NHS responds to those who shout loudest. I find that sad.

I find that sad too

I used to be a sister in an opd dept and our consultants used to get their diary out there and then and say "how's the 5th of May for you?" kind of thing. I guess I was just hoping for similar here!

I rang the sec today, she was sooo lovely. Have explained all my commitments (now coupled with the fact we seem to have sold our house today after 2 years on the market just to add to the stress!!) and she said she'd find out and call me asap. she thinks it will def by May though, so that's something

how will you manage with your partner being away and during school holidays - that could be really hard?!
