Anyone else suffer with heartburn/reflux/gerd? What are your symptoms?

I started getting this a few years ago, and my symptoms are quite bad. Interestingly, it got better for about a year after I had DD, but lately it's back.

I don't have it all the time - it comes and goes - but makes my life quite miserable when I do get an attack. I get quite bad chest pains (but have been told it's not my heart, am quite young) and sometimes I can feel it in my back too. Is it just me, or do others get this too?

Last night I did not get to sleep until about 3 am. The worst thing is that even though I know it's reflux, at the back of my mind is the worry that perhaps it could be my heart after all....

just sent dh to get me some gaviscon
have had omeprazole b4 and it did help so might have to go back on it
do you get pain in the centre of ur chest in between ur clevage ? thats where i feel it

Feelingscared · 25/03/2009 22:34

I know what you mean candyfluff - when I feel it coming on I also dread going to bed. I sometimes get in the centre my chest, but sometimes also a crampy type pain in my left hand side (feels like under my breast) and sometimes a sort of tight feeling too. TMI but I think it's a combination of acid and also trapped gas.

I tried omeprazole but only for a week - didn't seem to make any difference - maybe i need to give it another go.

I got chest pain that radiated through to my back. Also the pain went up my neck to my jaw.

Had to have an ecg to rule out heart trouble (nothing wrong there) so gp said it must be heartburn, even though there was no burning sensation. Gave me Ranitidine (Zantac) which worked.

However, I've since lost a stone and not had it anymore.

Thanks girlandboy.
Good to hear that you are better !

As soon as I uttered the words "chest pain" the doctor said that he had to (legally) refer me for an ecg.

Apparently I had set the ball rolling on that one!

Therefore, if you are worried it's your heart then you can ask about an ecg. Mine was done in the gp's surgery and took about 2 minutes.

Right first of all you need to speak to your doctor. I get v v bad bad heartburn but feel it mostly in my throat/ upper chest (I have a hiatus hernia) but I have heard people getting pains in their chest because of h/b. It all depends where the problem originates from. For instance an ulcer will be lower than where I get my pain.

If the doc decides it is heartburn they will check if you have helicobater which can be sorted out with antibiotics.

If it's not that then you need to have a endoscopy - camera down throat - which isn't too bad as long as you get sedated. I tried without it first time. Horrible.

I tried omeprazole at first but it gave me bad trapped wind and stomach cramps and have been on esomeprazole ever since as it was kinder on my stomach.

I first had bad h/b at 16 and it took me about 8 years to get diagonised so push your gp if you feel something's wrong. It's a horrible pain to deal with.

Watch your diet and raise your top half up in bed if you can with pilows. It really helps.

trixiethepixie · 25/03/2009 23:30

Btw my bro has heart probs (not wanting to scare you and he is 27 now but early 20's when diagnosised) so check it out if you're not happy.

Feelingscared · 25/03/2009 23:58

Thanks Trixie. I had an endoscopy about four and a half years ago, and everything was fine then, but maybe I need to go back to the doctors.
