ds has snot cold from hell. his left eye is oozing greenish gunk (but isn't red or bloodshot). is this necessarily conjunctivitis...or is it just gunk cold overload. any suggestions for something that might help (either the eye gunk or sore nose or general cold dispersal) thanks x

p.s. i have it too, but no eye gunk

If eye is not red or bloodshot or painful then it is probably viral gunk not bacterial IYSWIM. Sometimes dd has a day of gunk from all head orifices but the eyes clear up on their own after 24 hours. See how he is tomorrow, if it persists or they look sore, time to break out the eye-drops (and the ear-plugs).

conjunctivitis I'm afraid. This always happens to ds when he has a cold. I think he rubs the snot into his eyes and they get infected. He has it now .
Get some brolene drops and if it's not much better in a day or two then go to the doctors for some antibiotic drops.

dd got that for 2-3 days in one eye last week. was on verge of taking her to doctor but it cleared up and she got an ear infection instead - nice!!

conjunctivitis has always cleared up on its own, in my experience, if I leave it alone (cleaning the gunk away makes it much worse and makes it linger much longer). Takes 5-7 days if I have made the mistake of trying to clean it, give Calpol for the irritation.

Heathcliffscathy · 20/04/2005 20:41

so leave the gunk zeb? i'm keen not to go down antibiotic eyedrops route and i don't see that gp can give me anything else...i'll try leaving gunk tomorrow, if it bothers him loads, will continue to clear if not...hopefully will clear up soon...thanks for advice

every time you wipe it away you just spread the infection (I reckon). As long as they can open their eyes to see (might take a few minutes) after a sleep, then I would leave it.

Splashing in the bath or a swimming pool is a better way to clear the gunk, ime.

It's a long haul thing, though. Once it looks awful you have to just resist the temptation to clean it away for several days. It's sitting on your hands for several days waiting for it to clear away that is so hard (it gets hard & falls off their face, ooh yuck!). But do give calpol if he seems at all ratty, it must really sting.
