Black bruise under my big toenail - and i have no idea what caused it

i know it sounds quite minor, and it doesn't really hurt. It takes up roughly a third of my toenail and has been there about 10 days. The weird thing is i can't remember knocking it or anything that might've caused it to turn black.

also since i noticed it, it's barely changed colour or decreased in size, although thankfully hasn't got any bigger either.

i'm starting to worry it might be something sinister.

I have one too! It's been there for months now, and is very slowly growing out. No idea what I did to my toe to cause it either.

really? god, i was starting to think i was the only one! so it's sort of 'growing out' with the toenail itself? that's so weird, isn't it?

Yes it will grow out with your toenail, and it will take ages.

I dropped a 15in metal saute pan lid on my toe with the metal edge of the lid catching my big toe bed back in july/august last year and it still growing out.

I had to paint my toe nails dark burguney for months so they all matched .

and be prepared for the nail to go a manky yellow colour too! but rest assured that it will (eventually) go away.

try Tea Tree Essential oil on it. www.avena.co.uk have a good quality.

I've had it, it can be caused by a tight fitting shoe or just a lot of walking.

But go to the gp if it doesn't grow out with the toenail, or if it spreads.
