white spots on 1yr olds tongue - what is it?

my son was really unwell over the weekend - high temperature (102.7), coughing so much he was sick. he cried so much it was obvious he was in agony and when i fed him he would wince in pain. i thought he might have tonsilitis but i have noticed he has white spots on his tongue. are they mouth ulcers (in which case i can understand why he was screaming when i gave him food)or is it a symptom of another more serious illness? he has a couple of red spots on his face too.

might be talking out of my behind here but could it be thrush???

When I looked at the thread title Thrush came straight to my mind as well but if he's been feeling a bit under the weather it could be Tonsiltis.

I'd say possibly thrush too. Get it checked out tomorrow asap, as it can sorted out very quickly and really makes a difference (DS2 had it at 3 days old and was very miserable, not feeding etc) If you ring NHS Direct or your out of hours GP they can prescribe daktarin or similar directly to your nearest late night chemist for you to pick up (that's what we had to do)

My DS had thrush when he was 12 months - he was really poorly we thought it was tonsils too but it was just white on his tongue, it really shocked us how much discomfort it caused him. Really not nice for them

when i say white spots i mean spots that have white heads - almost like ulcers. can thrush look like that? the rest of his tongue is normal coloured

My first thought was oral thrush, dont know what its like in little ones but I had it as a teenager and it made me feel truly awful. but went to docs got some medicine and it cleared up really quickly.

My dd's just had oral thrush - she was really upset with it too. I thought that it was an ulcer to start with, but the spot seemed to double in size overnight. Some nystatin drops form the doc have cleared it up nicely.

he constantly drools too.he's been like that for ages, i put it down to teething but his mates don't seem to be constantly sopping wet!
so it might be thrush, could it be hand foot and mouth without the foot and mouth bit?

went to the doctor this morning and ofcourse the white spots on the tongue had gone!
doctor thinks he has had tonsilitis but is either getting over it himself or it may be viral so encouragingly he wouldn't prescribe antibiotics.
thanks for all your input last night, it made up my mind to actually take him to the doctor (i hate going, they always make me feel like a time waster!)
