Colposcopy, Loop Diathermy - IV sedation?

Hiya,

Does anyone know if loop diathermy can be done under conscious (IV) sedation? I'm going for a colcoscopy and am worried about that as well as having to have further treatment afterwards. Have researched the colposcopy part and 'think' I might be able to handle it (with a good bit of sweat and tears on my part) but 'if' I have to have anything else that is even slightly invasive done (biopsy or loop), I will freak. Am insanely terrified of anything medical

There is no way I could have the local, have never had GA before, both feel extremely scary

I know I am over-worrying and being a total wuss but that's the nature of my fear. I guess I'd just be more than happy to know whether IV sedation is available under those circumstances because I know I can handle the thought of it having previously had it for dental treatment. Does anyone have experience of this?

I've had a loop diathermy and also biopsy. Tbh i don't remember it being painful. If you are very fearful I'd talk to the hospital first and sort it out before your appointment. I'm sure they must be able to do something. Good luck.

hi there,

I have had this as well and it really isn't painful, but if you have a fear of medical procedures do talk to them - I'm sure they can help.

Honestly though, it's really not as bad as it sounds, and the nurse held my hand throughout

Hi
I've had a loop and it wasn't too bad - I loathe any dental treatment (didn't go for 10 yrs) and would much rather go for colposcopy! Aren't people odd?
Anyway from what I know they can do loop treatment under GA, not sure about for biopsy though. Really don't know about IV sedation, as they'd need to have the kit/anaethestist about.
As the others have said talk it though with the colposcopy staff, you may not need any treatment at this time anyway. The colposcopist will be able to go through the options.

i had a colposcopy, biopsy and treatment done about 9 years ago. I found it to be an extremley uncomfortable experience that i never wanted to receive again. The biopsy hurt and i was listening to comments such as 'oh you are a bleeder arent you' i could not laugh or find any of it funny. There is a screen you can watch which when they took the biopsy looked like i was bleeding to death. However it is so enlarged and it is a tiny biopsy. I had laser treatment and i remember the burning smell. I hated it

My smears have been ok unitl 4 months ago and i had to go for a colposcy again. As you can imagine i was petrified. I explained this to the nurse. She was kind and very helpful.

This time the colposcopy was done very gently and with little discomfort, they explained every thing they were doing. I felt so at ease.

I have to go back to have another biopsy and although im not looking forward to it as i dont look forward to smears i am not nervous or scared.

So my advice to you would be to talk and explain your nervousness with them before you have it done.

I have had 2 LLETZ treatments under GA. I even hated smear tests and would cry during then so the consultant was happy for me to have GA. I have to say that I was only under for 20 mins as it was so fast and I was doing homework in the hospital bed within a couple of hours, it didn't make me feel rough at all.

TBH I am jolly releived I had GA, I think I would be a nervous wreck being concious during the procedure. Your consultant should let you have GA for treatment. Not sure about the biopsy though, it did hurt but was very quick and I was tender afterwards. I had a diazepam before and had planned a quiet day on the sofa with celeb magazines for afterwards so I could feel sorry for myself in peace.
