Very sore throat, one week on.

Started middle of last week and after a really restless night on Thursday I went to the doctor on Friday. Viral infection diagnosed hence the tenderness in throat and blocked up feeling leading up to ears.

One week on and i've been takin paracetamol and iburofen most days, although not every 4 hours as I did feel it was starting to get better and didn't want to rely on them too much. I've also used a throat spray too, but had stopped this too.

This morning my throat felt like it had plums in it for tonsils and swallowing was v difficult. Have asked for app for tomorrow at doctors as the pain in my ears is quite bad although bearable but my ear drums have burst before and I'm worried about the chances of this happening again as it really affected my hearing last time.

So what I'm asking is, any ideas on whats causing this? OR what'll make me feel better?

I'm totally fed up.

Go to chemist and get some hydrogen peroxide - dilute and gargle - your throat will be better in hours.

It sounds bacterial rather than viral if it is causing you to have earache though so maybe demand some anti b's.

See the doc gave me a prescription last week for difflam stuff to gargle, but.. I can't gargle (pathetic I know). So I went to boots and asked for something the same but could I have a spray (my mum had used one years ago).

I really think i might need antibiotics, a week is ages when you feel under the weather, I take my hat off to people who are seriously or continuously ill. It's tough work. Esp being in a school, when you have to shout to be heard

If it is viral - ABs will do nothing...but that doens't mean it hasn't been mis-diagnosed as viral.

Sudafed may help decongest you ears though

I would ask for ABs if it's still so sore after a week. I sympathise, I used to get horrendous throats, but I had my tonsils taken out 3 weeks ago, so fingers crossed

SimpleAsABC · 12/03/2009 17:50

SMS thats the kind of spray I've got just now. I'm not sure it is really doing much good!!

Cocole how was getting your tonsils out?

Horrible! The first couple of days was ok but the 3rd-5th day the pain was unbearable. I got and infecton so it was still sore for a few more days. The hospital recommends you take the painkillers for 10 days - 2 weeks, it was not to bad after the infection started to go. I was up and about shopping etc, I wasn't 'sick' IYSWIM.

Yeah. They've threatened to take mines out for a while. I'm a bit of a scaredy cat though, I don't know how i'd be.

Can I hijack this thread for my DH?

He's had a sore throat for over 4 weeks now. Had anti bs (1 week course and finished the course last Tuesday)

His tonsils are still swollen and he went to the Doctors today and they've referred him for a blood test. (To rule out GFever)

I have 2 questions -

  1. dd1 has a sore looking throat - should take her to the GPs just in case she has the same thing as DH
  1. over than GF, what could it be? He was feeling under the weather at the weekend but nothing else to indicate GF
Idrankthechristmasspirits · 16/03/2009 21:27

I get sore throats alot but weirdly enough it's because of recurrent ear infections....
I feel your pain OP, i currently have a perforated ear drum after yet another infection.

Sounds like it could be GF (i had it about 6 yrs ago), it's viral so the AB's wouldn't have helped which is why the blood test is needed.

I would take dd to the GP to get her checked out if it doesn't clear up after a week/if she becomes really uncomfortable / high temp etc.
