Muscle in spasm which is trapping a nerve

Help.

A muscle in the lower left of my back is in spasm (has been for three weeks now) it has trapped a nerve and so I have sciatic pain as a result. I have been to the doctors and their response is to give me painkillers.

Is there anything I can do to try to release this muscle spasm?

There is a solid lump under the skin that is painful to the touch and won't go away, apparently this is the knotted up muscle.

Please give me some ideas - I am getting very tired of being in so much pain now.

I had acupuncture for this problem.

It relaxed the muscle after I severely strained my back picking up DS1.

It worked wonders.

Thanks ABetaDad!

I will look into that and find out where does it locally. How many sessions did you need roughly? (was it a long process or pretty quick is what I mean!)

I had one session and a very deep massage. the guy that did it was an outstanding acupuncture practicioner.

It was pretty magical. I pulled my back and basically had to walk totally bent double through the streets near where I lived in London straight to his surgery and he had me right as rain inside 2 hours.
