Just wondered if it is really worth using a mouthwash and, if so, what you would recommend

My dentist recommends using one. I usually buy listerine - but is personal choice! Or whatever is on offer. My ds (age 6) uses one also.

I'm no dentist but I'd advise avoiding any which contain mouthwash. I use Dentyl.

Thunderduck · 06/03/2009 20:27

Which contain alcohol, not mouthwash.

cositjustisok · 07/03/2009 08:12

I always use a mouthwash and use Dentyl too. I would recommend using one also that soes not contain alcohol as Thunderduck says.

divedaisy · 07/03/2009 14:00

I never looked at the ingredients! I wonder if listerine has alcohol?? Maybe that's why I like it!!!!!

Thunderduck · 07/03/2009 15:08

Listerine does contain alcohol. I'd change brands if possible as alcohol based mouthwashes have been linked with an increased risk of oral cancer.

mersmam · 07/03/2009 16:19

I avoid mouthwashes at all costs now (used to use them). There were some things in the press a few months ago saying that mouthwash has been proven to increase the risk of oral cancer and should only be available on prescription... enough to scare me off!

Thunderduck · 07/03/2009 16:24

Alcohol free mouthwash is fine.

mersmam · 07/03/2009 16:58

Thanks Thunderduck - did not realise that you can get it alcohol free!

I use Dentyl.

If I get bleeding gums (a few times a year) I use Corsadyl (I think thats what its called)

mersmam · 07/03/2009 17:31

I'd probably do the same mutt - doubt whether a couple of bottles will do any harm when other people have used it for a lifetime!

While I'm on this thread with a dental theme I wanted to ask something I've been wondering about for a while - how do people clean their toothbrushes??
I've read elsewhere that they can carry loads of germs if you don't clean them.
I used to use TCP but cannot stand the smell...
