does anyone know what can cause raised white cell count in urine when infection has now been treated???

cos I am worrying.

I rang today to get my urine sample results today to ensure that my wee infection has gone, but my white cell count is still very raised, so I have to go back tomorrow morning at 9am to see the docs again.

I have not been right, wellness wise, since the beginning of january when I caught the sickness bug that does the rounds each year.

a week later I was then DX'd with a kidney infection, and at that point had red, as well as white, blood cells present, plus obviously bad kidney pain.

since getting over that, I have had another sickness bug, that headachey virus doing the rounds, and then last week went for a smear which caught on my coil, causing major pain as well as a urine infection.

am now feeling human again, but not right (still very achey and bruised feeling inside, and belly is still slightly swollen especially on my left side), and of course the urine is still not right.

anyone with any idea why??

or at least, what can I ask/expect??

TIA

I don't know! Going to re-read your post again v. carefully but wanted to post to say that I am reading it...

psychomum5 · 05/03/2009 21:06

seriously- have they done more urine tests and have made completely sure that there's no residual infection?

emma1977 · 05/03/2009 21:09

Quite often contamination from the genital tract, as it is difficult to get a clean urine sample unless catheterised.

Although, Chlamydia should also be considered and tested for.

Lindenlass · 05/03/2009 21:09

From here:

"White Blood Cells

Pyuria refers to the presence of abnormal numbers of leukocytes that may appear with infection in either the upper or lower urinary tract or with acute glomerulonephritis. Usually, the WBC's are granulocytes. White cells from the vagina, especially in the presence of vaginal and cervical infections, or the external urethral meatus in men and women may contaminate the urine.

If two or more leukocytes per each high power field appear in non-contaminated urine, the specimen is probably abnormal. Leukocytes have lobed nuclei and granular cytoplasm. "

Which suggests that it could just be contaminated and there's nothing to worry about.

It's possible the antibiotics you had previously were not strong enough to kill all the bugs of so they have isolated the antibiotics that will work in the lab and you're going to get a new prescription.

psychomum5 · 05/03/2009 21:17

diffID, I have now given three samples, all high white cells, no infection now tho in the last one, but still high white cell count...................shich is why they want me back in.

chlamydia surely would show up as infection, and there is none, and besides, have had that before (sadly), nope, def not that.

OP posts:
psychomum5 · 05/03/2009 21:18

oh, and scrooged, last lot of antibiotics were strong.

they said that they gave me the strongest poss without having IV type due to my allergies and history.

OP posts:
psychomum5 · 05/03/2009 21:18

have just read lindenlass's properly.

am hoping tis just that......

OP posts:
scrooged · 05/03/2009 21:19

Are the white blood cells in your urine sample?

psychomum5 · 05/03/2009 21:24

scrooged, yup.

assuming they might do bloods tomorrow t see if they are also raised there, but not sure, hence this thread.

OP posts:
scrooged · 05/03/2009 21:25

Why do you think it's chlamydia?

scrooged · 05/03/2009 21:28

I'd say this but he's a doctor

psychomum5 · 05/03/2009 21:28

I don;t.

someone else suggested it, so I responded. there is no way (IMHO) that it can be that anyway.

I just don;t know why else tho, hence the thread, cos I am fretting about dreadful things.

((googled. if not contaminated then could be kidney disease, or other dire things, and I am being silly and probably completely fine and want backing on the fineness.........))

scrooged · 05/03/2009 21:30

It sounds like an infection. It's possible that you picked up something prior to the urine sample being done or you did it when it was not clear (antibiotics had not kicked in).

psychomum5 · 05/03/2009 21:34

ok, thankyou.

I hope so

thing is this was to ensure that infection was gone, antibiotics were almost finished (was done on last day of tabs), and that was my second lot in a 4wk period for the same/similar thing (one lot for kidney, other lot for urine).

argh

I am panicking over nothing I bet aren;t I

OP posts:
scrooged · 05/03/2009 21:37

Probably. Antibiotics are tricky things, they have to work out which strain of bacteria a patient has to work out what type of antibiotics work on that bug.

Until you know what it is then it's not worth worrying about. It may be absolutely nothing.

psychomum5 · 05/03/2009 21:40

ah, that may be the problem then.........I am allergic to 5 families of drugs so am limited in what I can be given.

I did read in the link that allergies can cause raised white cells too, so lets hope it is all as simple as that and that I am not dying of some awfule never-seen-before-disease (ok, mild exaggeration there, but YGMP)

OP posts:
scrooged · 05/03/2009 21:42

True. Wait and see what they say tomorrow. If you are allergic to the antibiotics then this would cause your symptoms. Try not to worry

psychomum5 · 05/03/2009 21:44

but tis so hard.

thankyou for your help and advice tho, much appreciated

OP posts:
scrooged · 05/03/2009 21:47

You're welcome. Let me know what he/she said.

psychomum5 · 05/03/2009 21:48

will do
