If your child has had it, they can't catch it again?

and its ok for them to be around someone who has had it / who has it?

thanks.

you can get it a secoind time if you only had amild dose the forst time.

however, i had it 3 times as a child and have had a suspected "dose" in my teens too

oliviasmama · 05/03/2009 17:32

I was told by a doctor that you can get it more than once

PrimulaVeris · 05/03/2009 17:34

Most people only get it once

But is quite possible to get more times - my ds has had it twice.

kiddiz · 05/03/2009 17:39

My nephew had it twice. He was really poorly 2nd time round.
If a child didn't build up significant immunity 1st time I'm guessing they would get it again sooner or later anyway. IMO better sooner as chickenpox for an adult is horrible. Not much point in avoiding people with therefore.

My friends DS has had it 3 times, none of those times were particularly mild. It isn't hugely common to get it more than once though.

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 05/03/2009 17:55

ds2 had it very mildly twice ( firdt time he as only a few weeks old, second time when he was nearly 2) Unfortunately he then got shingles (same virus) when he was four - which was much worse , he he is likely to get it (shingles)again. I would not be happy about him - eg sharing a bed or going on a playdate where there is confirmed chickenpox in the house, but other than that we take no othe prevaustions.

oh god !

i dont know what to do now then... DS invited to bdday party where one child has had it in the last week, one child likely to have it when we arrive... DS had it when he was two i think, not massively badly but def. spots etc.

advice please oh wise ones !!!!

he question you need to ask yourself is are you going to spend the rest of your son's childhood trying to avoid chickenpox suffers on the off chance that he might not be immune? Do you have any reason to believe he might not be?
The general feeling here seems to be that, while some children are unlucky enough to get it more than once, the majority don't. My 3 are 12, 18 and 20 and none of them has had it more than once. I had it very mildly as a young child...mum says I only had about 3 spots, yet I never got it again. My nephew is the only child I know to have it more than once and he was pretty well covered in spots the first time too. Also he was about 4 the first time and got it again age 10 or 11.
If I were you I'd risk the party but you have to feel comfortable with your choice so it's not really up to me. Who said parenting was easy eh?

mankymummy · 06/03/2009 08:52

think you're right, DS will be devastated if he cant go and he's a pretty tough kid. plus he goes to nursery with the child whose party it is so would have probably got it again by now... thanks.
