Is this something to do with the menopause do you suppose? I'm 45 tomorrow - I thought they were supposed to fade out, not double in frequency. Any other ladies of a certain age with this problem or is it just me?

Just me then. I am a bleeding freak. Well I kind of knew that, I guess...

I also have a short cycle and have also started period no.4 since xmas.
I am currently under investigation for early menopausal symptoms( am 36)

I think a short cycle combined with heavy bleeding can be a sign of the menopause, but you need to see a dr to rule out other causes

Me, me, me! Well, I did have until I started taking Agnus Cactus, a natural hormone regulator. My periods were every 8 to 1 days but now, three months after starting with Agnus Cactus they are back to normal. Also gone are the mood swings and I am sleeping so much better too. It has really made a world of difference to me. HTH

Get the GP to check your hormone levels first and if everything's normal, then Agnus Castus should help. A friend of mine takes it and it's really helped. Agnus Castus is supposed to have the same benefits as taking progesterone tablets, but with fewer side effects. (I'm not a doc or herbalist, this is based on purely empirical evidence).

OK SubRosa, sounds like a good idea. I have been idly Googling which is never a good plan and am now convinced I have everything from PCOS to cancer of the uterus.
