My Sil has been given multy vitamins for her two month old DD, to take until she is 5. She has asked me if I gave any to my own children from what i remember I gave them from the age of 6 mth but cannot remember when I stopped giving them. Is 2 month not a bit early though? have guidlines changed?

If she's ff then there are vits in the formula. If she's bf then there can be a question about vit d levels and some areas suggest bf mothers supplement with vitamin drops.

I didn't bother, and it's questionable that you need them if you've got an adequate diet and get a decent amount of natural light. (More of a question in mothers with dark skin or who don't go out much).

This site gives a good overview

I'm not surprised she's not getting out a lot if she's got a 2 month old! Anyway, at this time of year the light isn't really strong enough - we build up most of our vitamin D stores in the summer.

If your sil is light skinned and ate well/got out and about while she was pregnant then her own stores of vitamin D are probably fine and she'll pass this on in her breastmilk.

I suppose she could take supplements if she was worried and didn't want to give them to her dd. As far as I know (and I'm not a HCP), recommending supplements for all breastfed babies is to try to catch the few who will have a problem.
