Hi - finally done the inevitable and got a fixed brace fitted top and bottom. What can I eat?? How soon will it start feeling normal? Advice please.

I couldn't eat anything for a week, and not much for two weeks.

My diet was wine and chloraseptic spray.

oh great - and looking at your name did you find talking for extended periods tricky?

Talking was really hard for a few weeks - pain at first, but lots of dribbling too.

Hi Kath,

Welcome to the club

OK - eat soft foods (pasta, rice, soup, mashed food) for the first couple of days and drink plenty of water. Avoid - sticky sweets like toffee - apples unless cut up - corn on the cob - spare ribs.

Keep your teeth clean and use those little brushes to get into the areas that the toothbrush just wont reach. Keep applying the wax especially around the back part of the mouth and across any wires that dont have any teeth fixed to them.

You will feel normal in a couple of days and within a couple of months forget that they are on - well apart from when you have to clean them.

Heres a good site with lots of info, images and fellow wearers.

Also if you are using a bog standard brush - invest in an electric one as you will notice a massive difference.

scienceteacher · 23/02/2009 22:16

A water jet is good for cleaning them.

LOL

thanks for all your help. I have been browsing the website and have ordered a water jet thing. I was told not to use the electric brush around the brace?

Mashed potato and tinned fruit (not at same time!) for lunch.
