Anyone else had a cold virus that lasted more than 2 weeks?

I've had a cough/headache/temperature/snotty nose and generally felt pathetic for nearly 2 weeks now. Have taken anti-biotics with no effect and am now wondering when it'll ever go away... Half term has been a wash-out, poor kids...

Any advice?

Very surprised you were given anti bs- they are NOT recommended for viruses- they won't work on a virus- who is your useless GP??? They were told NOT to prescribe for colds and viruses years back as they make the whole population immune to antibiotics long term.
Sorry - not having a go at you!!
You should only be given ABs if youhave a bacterial infection, such as a proven chest infection.

Two weeks is notlong, tbh. Some viruses can last a long time...weeks and weeks.
The onlt thing you can do is rest (??) whenever you can, take some gentle exercise to boost your immume system, eat well, and get as much sleep as poss.

It will go...

They gave me anti-bios as a precaution in case there was any infection in my chest as I am asthmatic.

Am a bit depressed that you think 2 weeks isn't long. I am so fed up with feeling ill. Am trying to rest but you know how it is with 2 young DCs.

I had an ongoing cold/cough from October through to the end of January so two weeks is definitely not worth worrying about

A viral cold clears in a week and isn't affected by antibiotics.

Since it has gone beyond two weeks, and you have a cough, you probably have a throat infection. It is normal that your doctor prescribed antibiotics.

Hmm, I've taken them all and am no better. Just going to have to sit it out. I have no energy to do anything though. Everyone has run out of sympathy and thinks I'm milking it now too!

Cotedazure many drs will not prescribe ABs for a throat infection etc unless swabs prove strep etc or if your glands are swollen and you have araging fever.

I can see why you were given ABs if you have asthma, but they won't shift a virus.

Coughs canlast for weeks and weeks- or months sometimes- they are the last thing to go when you have had a virus.

Steam inhalations can help blocked sinuses and coughs, and you can add Oil of Olbas to the water.

a "head cold" should clear in 7-10 days, but if youhave other symptoms it will be a virus that can take along time to shift- there is no quick way, but try to rest and drink plenty.

MMmm - other natural things you can try are:

Manuka Honey

TSP of Turmeric in water/milk or juice and/or a mix of equal quantities of turmeric and honey

Boost your immune system by getting some probiotic powder/capsules - take the max dose daily for 2 weeks and then drop the dose down to the lowest and stick on that.

oh and cut out dairy as best you can as it increases mucus production.

Fizzy water will help with the tickle of the cough.

Minko I have had the same thing for nearly 2 weeks now, i don't ever get ill so it is really pissing me off!! I keep thinking i am nearly over it when i'll start getting really achy joints or my ears will go all funny. So i have total sympathy for you. I hope you get better soon
