Help! Does anyone know anything about mumps?

My brother who still lives with my mum and dad has just been told hes probably got mumps. I have dd1 2.6 who has had her MMR and dd2 who is only 6wks and therefore hasn't had her MMR yet.

Thing is my mum is due to have the girls tomorrow as I have an exam. My mum is happy to come to me to avoid the girls getting near my bro but....my mum has never had a mumps immunisation and my Nan cannot remember if my mum ever had mumps as a child(which obviously would have probably immunised her against it.)

So does anyone know how likely it is that my mum will get it, if the chances are that she has not be immunised? What are the chances dd2 will get it? What happens if she does? Will she be protected at all because I am breastfeeding? Sorry for all the questions an I appreciate any help. Also we went out for lunch with my mum yesterday and she was holding dd1 and dd2 so does this mean the chances are if they're going to get it they'll get it now anyway so my mum will be ok to come over tomorrow? Thanks

I think your Mum could only give it to your DDs if she has actually caught it herself already. How long has your brother been ill - I think the incubation period is about 14 days. I think DD2 may get some protection through bfing but only if you have had mumps yourself.
