HELP I THINK HE IS HALLUCINATING.......

ds2 (nearly 14 months) has still got a high temp. I took him doctors last night and they said to just give him medised and ibuprophen. He hasnt got an ear infection, just a virus. (isnt that what they put everything down to these days???)

We are both fraught (sp?) and exhausted.
he is laying here in his vest and nappy shivering but boiling. he is trying to go to sleep but everytime he closes his eyes, after a few minutes, he mutters, throws his arms and legs around and starts screaming and wakes up like he is hallucinating (not sure is possible at this age). he hasnt even got the energy to crawl...he just lays here on the floor moaning and crying when he is awake....im trying to get fluids into him and so far he has taken them ok. What else can I do? I feel so helpless........

If it helps at all a friend's 3 year old had something similar also described as a virus and she said his eyes were darting about like he was hallucinating
Must be really frightening with such a young one
If you are worried, ring doctor's again or NHS Direct (I have found them v good in the past)

when my dd was about this age she had such a high temp she had a fit (like a blackout, but the dr called it a fit/seizure) we ended up having to take her to hospital, she was kept in for observation 24 hrs, i would get another opinion (like nhs direct, your gp or A&E)

My DS had this with his last stomach bug... his temp got to 39.4 which was incredibly worrying, I would probably have taken him to A&E for a second opinion, but my MIL's a nurse so she knew exactly what to do and he was ok after a few days of sponging and fluids... I hope your little one's ok big hugs!

If you think he's in danger of fitting I really would go to a doctor, just for the peace of mind if not for anything else!

If his temp doesn't go down with calpol/nurofen then he will need to be seen again I think - call NHS direct for advice - if they recommend it, then you'll be seen today again by a GP. Have no idea about the 'hallucinating' though, but tell the GP obviously. Poor wee pet - hope he recovers soon. My ds2 is 14mths too.

I know they are crap but i've just found one of those forehead thermometers in the back of the drawer.....said 39 on there when I've just taken it now....

Titania - I was told by an out of hours doc once that ibuprofen/paracetamol can take up to half an hour to take effect and bring the temperature down. If it hasn't brought the temp down after half an hour, go get him seen again DON'T feel like you're wasting anyone's time, just go.

I would definitely get him looked at again today Titania. When did he last have Calpol?

It definitely should have worked by now. I would either ring nhs direct or take him to A and E. Being confused and "out of it" is a clear indication for him to see a doctor.

Agree with tiggiwinkle - 2 hours is plenty of time for it to have acted... Please phone your docs surgery at the very least...

If its any help, my dd1 had a virus earlier this year, high temperature and she was delirious in the night. She's 7 so easier to tell but she kept having nightmares and imagining horrible things happening. I hadn't experienced this before but just to say it does happen. However, I also think if temperature not dropped 2-3 hours after taking ibuprofen speak to doctor. DD1 always takes about 2 hrs after ibuprofen for her temp to drop but then it seems to kick in. Calpol on the other hand rarely does anything for her. Hope your ds is feeling better soon.

NHS direct rang me back and said that he really needs to get to a doctor this afternoon.....SO...I rang my surgery and they said that they would take my name and number and they said that they will try and get the doctor to ring me back but they cant promise as he is a locum and has several other exra patients to deal with as it is........FFS!!!!!! AND THEY WONDER WHY PEOPLE GO STRAIGHT TO A&E.....its bloody disgusting....he is a baby for goodness sake....
