HELP I THINK HE IS HALLUCINATING.......

Titania · 05/04/2005 12:59

ds2 (nearly 14 months) has still got a high temp. I took him doctors last night and they said to just give him medised and ibuprophen. He hasnt got an ear infection, just a virus. (isnt that what they put everything down to these days???)

We are both fraught (sp?) and exhausted.
he is laying here in his vest and nappy shivering but boiling. he is trying to go to sleep but everytime he closes his eyes, after a few minutes, he mutters, throws his arms and legs around and starts screaming and wakes up like he is hallucinating (not sure is possible at this age). he hasnt even got the energy to crawl...he just lays here on the floor moaning and crying when he is awake....im trying to get fluids into him and so far he has taken them ok. What else can I do? I feel so helpless........

Which would get you seen quicker - A&E or parking yourself in front of receptionist at surgery and refusing to move til doctor sees you?
Surely no medic would refuse to see an ill baby!!

Tiggiwinkle · 05/04/2005 14:23

Ring nhs direct back and explain that your surgery are not being helpful. If they think it is necessary they will call an ambulance to take him to hospital.

nailpolish · 05/04/2005 14:23

call nhs direct back and tell them you cant get an appt with your gp - they will then call the surgery themselves and get you an appt

When my elderly mum was ill in the early hours last year, NHS Direct arranged an ambulance to take her to hospital, coz the sister on the phone was concerned about her.

Titania, what exactly is it about your ds that is worrying you right now? Is it the hallucinations? Because if it is that, don't worry about them: as I said on your other thread, my ds used to have them. They are a bit freaky but they only mean your ds has a temperature.
Or is the temperature worse now do you think? Are you worried about not being able to reduce it? That is more worrying I admit. But you say he is drinking so he shouldn't be getting dehydrated.
Are there other worrying symptoms?

Titania · 05/04/2005 14:30

the fact that he just seems to be getting worse. hes not drinking a lot now....he had a bit a while ago but then threw it. he is shivering but looks like a beetroot. he just doesnt seem to be getting any better....i would say if anything he is worse than yesterday....

Im in shropshire Easy

I can't help with a lift then... sorry

donnie · 05/04/2005 14:31

ring for an ambulance and go to A & E - it is the best way to get there quickly. You are NOT worrying over nothing! the likelihood is your ds will be fine in the end but at the moment he is clearly ill and the GP/surgery are being useless. When my dd had a temp of 40.9 and was boiling red I went ape and rang for an ambulance - on the advice of NHS direct. Do it - good luck!

donnie · 05/04/2005 14:32

ps my dd also looked like a beetroot - I really hope he fels better soon

Lonelymum · 05/04/2005 14:35

Perhaps ring NHS direct back and say you are having difficulty being seen by the GP. Or go to the surgery and sit and wait until you are seen. I think you will feel better if you do something rather than just waiting for a phone call.

Toothache · 05/04/2005 14:41

Titania - If you ring NHS Direct and tell them that your surgery have been no help and you're considering phoning an ambulance they may contact your GP for you. Do it now! I'm sure it'll be fine, but sometimes these people need a kick up the arse to do anything to help. When I told NHS24 (Scottish equivalent) that my surgery would not see DS they were very angry and sorted them right out!

Titania · 05/04/2005 14:41

the practice nurse has just rung me and said that i should take him down when i can. preferably around 3.30 cos thats when the doctor gets in apparently. so im going to go get ready now and make sure im first in the queue.....thanks for all your help ladies....your all fab!!....will update later x x

Titania - If he's anything my ds his temperature will drop to normal whilst you wait to see the GP!!!

uwila · 05/04/2005 15:30

You can also put him in a bath of luke warm water. He probably won't like it. But, if he has a high fever, getting it down is more important than making him happy.

How high is the fever?

LIZS · 05/04/2005 15:37

Sorry he seems so unwell and hope you get some answers.

ds was like this when he had flu a few weeks ago after a major dose of Calpol 6+ - he was all over his room shouting and pointing but asleep. Scary but it did pass, although I'd be very concerned too as your ds is so young.

Titania · 05/04/2005 17:35

well poor little Ethan has got tonsillitis I am angry really that he wasn't checked out thoroughly in the first place yesterday....he could have had a good 24 hours of antibiotics in his system by now Oh well. Got them now. He is still hot but not as bad as he was. Thanks for you help ladies. means a lot to me x x x

Titania · 05/04/2005 17:37

oops gave his name away...oh well

GeorginaA · 05/04/2005 17:37

Oh poor baby I had that myself not long ago and it was really nasty, took me ages to recover (I didn't have anti-bs to help me along though - in retrospect I probably should have had them). Hugs to you both.

Titania · 05/04/2005 17:40

i have a bad history of tonsilitis......had it more times than i care to remember. he is obviously following my footsteps in that way!!

OP posts:
SPARKLER1 · 05/04/2005 17:45

Titania - sorry to hear about ds. Poor little thing. Tonisilitis is a horrible thing to get, at least it's been diagnosed and he's got the right medication at last. Doctors are a PITA aren't they? If your surgery is anything like mine - every doctor gives a different opinion.
