Sensitivity in ear pierced years ago.

Way back in the 70s it was the fashion to get one ear pierced. My bil did mine with a sharpened stud earring. Fine. A few years later it was again fashionable to have two pierced ears and so I went to a little jewellers and had the other one done. It got badly infected and I let it heal up but still wanted two so pierced it myself months later. Was fine for years. Then about a year ago this one particular hole began to get itchy when I had earrings in and sometimes swelled up and got hot. It sort of gathers a fatty deposit inside too so that when I put an earring in it pushes out a little lump of it. Anyway I now cannot wear earrings at all because this one hole acts up. Is there anything to try and solve this and wear earrings again?

are you allergic to the metal in the earrings?

I sometimes get a littl elump behind my ear piercing.
It is usually from cheap metal ear rings and goes within a week.

I tried putting a small gold hoop in and 'aclimatising' my ear to having an earring in it but it didn't work. Do I need to use surgical steel? Is that different to ordinary metal that earrings are made of?

gold is the worst for aggravating sensitive ears.

silver is the best, good quality sterling silver, be vey sure it's not nickel that looks silver!

dab a bit of savlon on the earring as you pop ot in and if it starts to get aggravated don't take the earring out, leave it in and keep clean with slated water.

salted water even

Wow what is wrong with gold?
'slated'?

gold's not a very clean metal... lots of impurities and for those prone to sensitivity and infections it seems to make things far worse.

silver is naturally an antiseptic and antibacterial substance so helps prevent infections.

Well that might explain a lot!
Think I might invest in some new silver earrings yay
