How is he?

misdee · 04/04/2005 22:14

he seems a bit down, have reminded him there is a consellor at the hospital if he needs to talk to someone outside the family about it.
another paitent visited him today, as they moved people upstairs as they had today coming out of intensive care, so one of the others was bored and wandering. he told Peter loads about transplant (the man had his 5years ago), and i think put his mind at rest a bit.
His mum said Peter was very calm the whole way there and even when they said it wasnt going ahead. I think, like us, he was hoping this was it and all the hospital stays would soon be over after the recovery period, and we could be a 'normal' family.

It must be a rollercoaster of emotions for all of you. Keeping my fingers crossed that he is back home soon where he belongs.

Leogaela · 05/04/2005 14:59

Misdee, I have just spotted this thread. I have been wondering how your dh is. Big hugs to you all. Is he well enough at the moment to enjoy Serena's first weeks?

misdee · 05/04/2005 15:01

he can only just pick her up and hold her for short periods, and only on his right hand side due to the ICD being fitted on the left. he does try, but cant do much atm.

Oh Misdee you're being amazingly strong, I don't know what to say but I really really hope it gets better for you guys!

bundle · 05/04/2005 15:05

oh misdee, i'm sorry about your disappointing news, but we all want everything to be in tip top condition to give peter the best chance of a full recovery, xxxx

Tiggiwinkle · 05/04/2005 15:06

misdee-I have been thinking about what you said about your DHs INR the other night. I had to have major surgery while taking warfarin 5 years ago. I had to stop taking the warfarin a few days before the op and inject myself with heparin. Would they not be able to put your DH on heparin so the INR is not an issue? (Not sure how long you can be on heparin for though-obviously your DHs op is not going to be a "planned" one.)

misdee · 05/04/2005 15:09

His INR went back to normal yesterday. was very odd, but on sunday before we got the call, he was feeling very ill, and we're wondering if a virus could've caused the blip with his INR.

Just caught up with this misdee - so sorry it didn't work out for Peter this time. We've all got our fingers crossed for the next opportunity and hope it comes soon.

Tiggiwinkle · 05/04/2005 15:18

Could have been. Have they mentioned an alternative to the warfarin? I know they are usually reluctant to do any procedure when you are taking it, whatever you INR. Heparin works differently I think so the bleeding is not a problem.

misdee · 05/04/2005 15:19

he has been on heparin before now, he doesnt like the injections (would have to be in the stomache due to having not much m,uscle/fat anywhere else atm)

Tiggiwinkle · 05/04/2005 15:23

Yes-I had to do mine in the tummy too!
But at least the INR is not an issue then.

melsy · 05/04/2005 15:43

Just seen this , been scanning the whole thread for last half hour with stomach turning.

Thinking of you and Peter. xx

Fio2 · 05/04/2005 15:45

they gave me heprain in the arse, it was awful. i hope he is ok? they can give it you through your main line , can they not?

misdee · 05/04/2005 16:11

i have no idea if they can fio. atm warfarin seems to be working well and normally he is well within the range of 2-3 (usually around 2.5) and has weekly blood tests. i can see them possibly increasing the blood tests and adjusting his dose each day. The vit K seemed to have worked well on sunday night/monday morning.lets hope he can keep his INR level steady now.

OP posts:
Fio2 · 06/04/2005 07:33

it can be a side effect of the drugs though, they should have checked before really

misdee · 06/04/2005 08:08

thats what i thought fio, as the recently changed a lot of peters medication and added some painkillers as he is getting lots of pain atm. i thought there may have been interaction with the warfarin, but they had monitored him for 2 weeks in hopital when they changed it, including his INR which was pretty stable.

OP posts:
Potty1 · 06/04/2005 09:12

Misdee - some of the little ones I kow who take warfarin do their own INR at home on a machine (coagucheck I think?). If having a really stable INR is important for transplant would they let you do this?

misdee · 06/04/2005 09:13

i've asked him to ask about this (isnt it like a finger prick tests used for diabetics?). at least then he can keep a daily check and any major blips would be spotted earlier and he'd be able to self-refer to the coag nurse for advise.

OP posts:
Potty1 · 06/04/2005 09:14

Yes - just a drop of blood on a strip I think.
