blood tests - 11 yr old

ds has to have a blood test every year and I dread it as he gets completely hysterical with anxiety.Last time we put the EMLA cream on an hour before but it left his skin very sore and red, so am thinking we might give it a miss this time (appointment in Feb) - would it make any difference really ? He finds the putting on of cream quite stressful too, obviously as a run up to the actual test. I hope every year that he'll be calmer.

There is another cream but I don't know the name of it. We discovered dd was allergic to EMLA when she went for allergy tests! We were told to ask for the other one next time.

ah, I wonder what that might be

Wish I could remember. Why don't you start a thread 'Alternatives to EMLA'?

thank you - he was offered the spray before but that alarmed him ! I'll start that thread OhYouBadKitten -good idea...I'm inclined to think though that it might be better to just get the blood test done without the stressful preamble !
He gets through it partly by the thought of a sustaining tea at Wagamama afterwards !
