Umbilical hernia

My new dd (c. a month old) looks like she's getting one - it sticks out quite a lot, and I'm familiar with it because her big sister had one. DD1's went down a lot (was massive to begin with) but she still has a very big 'outie' at 2yrs. Seems a bit weird me having two dds with them, both me and dh have veeeery concave navels. Both were born at 38 weeks by elective cs - does being born a bit early have anything to do with it? Obv. vast majority of 38 weekers don't have them, but I wondered if majority of umbilical hernias were to prem babies?

my dd1 who is now 4 had one and she was 3week 6day early but dd2 didnt and she was 2week 5day early so no idea. Sorry i know not very helpful but dd1 has an outie from it too - i dont think its too much to worry about.

That's true, it is hardly a health concern! Although no doubt it will cause no end of anxiety when she's a teenager! Must buy special themed books about desirability of minisculely different navels to encourage personal development. Thanks for replying, though!

no idea - but DS has one and he was born (naturally or spontaneously) at 36+5. still an outie at 4 months.

Ds2 was an outy until he was about 6 or 7 months, when it went back in.

However mine still sticks out since I had him! Gahhh

I think they are more common in preterm babies. DS1 was born at 35 weeks and had one. DS2 was full term and didn't.

However they both had inguinal (groin) hernias.

dd was born with one at 3 weeks overdue. Still has a prominant outie at nearly 3.

My ds was born at 38 + 2 (cs) - has one and she is now 10, I was told at the time the only problem in the future would be that she would not be able to have her belly button pierced (I had a secret smile to myself!)

they are more common in babies born early - dd3 was born at 36 weeks and had a golf size ball one at birth, and gp kept an eye on it - said if it doesn't go down significantly by 2 they'd look at options. She's just over 2 now and it's an outie - the rest of us have innies. It's very cute I think!

dd1's was golfball sized too, seemed almost as big as her face in the early days! I also think it looks cute now - although I worry I would think anything on her was cute. Interesting that they're more common in early babies, I thought that was the only thing they might have in common that me and dh didn't have.
