Recurrent UTI's embarrassing question

Hello

I have a rather embarrassing question to ask, I suffer from recurrent uti's and after having tests and a cystoscopy which all came back fine it was said that my infections are caused by ecoli that live down below. My specialist suggested natural live yoghurt, now I thought he meant to eat it, but when visiting my gp last week he seemed to think that the idea is to put the yoghurt down below . Has anyone else ever heard of this, or done this? As I am now confused exactly how often and how much I should be applying, and I take it this would done externally. I am really embarrassed to be typing this but any advice would be gratefully appreciated

Thanks an embarrassed Lynsy

I did both at the same time! Did the trick.
Don't be embarrassed, it is a pretty common thing and is horrible and painful. Hope that you get it sorted out.

So you ate the yoghurt and applied it down below, did you do it everyday? And just externally? - sorry to ask just want to get this problem sorted asap as is really getting me down. Thank you.x

I did both! Ate it and also slapped it all over a sanitary towel to keep it "in place".

Hope you feel better soon.

Yes, everyday and just externally. I have just been given a yogurt maker for Christmas, so I'll have plenty next time I need it! (Not sure that the person who gave it to me would be amused if they knew what I was doing with it!!!).

Thanks girls.

Ha ha yogurt maker, bet they didn't realise what a great present it was .

One more question (sorry) did you apply down below when you weren't suffering? Or does it help at all when you are?

Only used it when I had an infection.

Just wanted to add that I used to suffer a lot of recurrents utis, also caused by e-coli. I found that concentrated cranberry extract really helped. Also making sure I emptied my bladder and cleaned down below before and after sex. I've only had one infection last year, compared to previously getting them once every two weeks so something must of worked.

Thanks for all the advice. Do you happen to know is is ok to take concentrated cranberry extract when ttc? I have taken some vitimins before that state that should not be taking if trying for a baby.

You can also dip a tampon in yogurt and then insert that.

Lynsy · 06/01/2009 12:17

So you can actually apply it internally as well then? Wasn't sure if that would cause any sort of irritation?

Honestly I would ask the doc about that one. I know that you shouldn't take high dose vit c tablets when preg so I would be dubious about concentrated cranberry.
