Susiecutiebananas - if you around, GI and alcoholism?

one of my extended family is currently in hospital with gastrointestinal problems, including bleeding. The immediate problem is inflammation but they plan an investigation when that has gone done because scans have shown "massess" and they aren't sure what they are. My relative has lost a lot of weight in recent months but on an extreme diet.

They are an alcoholic who has been dry for a few months but fell off the wagon in a big way at the New Year.

Family history of gastrointestinal problems (e,g ulcerative colitis) and I avoid gluten although my coeliac blood test was negative because I fall asleep if I eat it. Her doctors won't say that alcohol caused this - but surely it must have played a part? Any idea where we go from here?
