Inflamed Hip Joint

dd ( 18 months )suddenly started to limp when she got up yesterday. Having walked well for 6 months it was as if she was an unsteady learner again. Didn't seem to cause her discomfort and I thought maybe she had slept awkwardly or got cramp. Anyway it seemed to improve during the day although she would be cautious about weight bearing on her right leg if she had been immobile for a while. Same thing happened again today. DH was home to see it for himself and called dr.

We have been told that her cold (prevalent for more than a week) may have inflamed the fluid in her hip joint. Has anyone come across this and does it clear up spontaneously ? We are told it is quite common but will be referred for an ultrasound next week if there is no improvement. We know she has no congenital problems as she was given an ultrasound at 4 weeks as a matter of routine.

Meanwhile dd is struggling to get about reverting to her push along toys and cruising the walls again - fortunately although frustrated she is still quite cheerful and can at least indicate when it hurts.

My DS had it at the same age and we took him to A&E as he could'nt weight bear on the affected side. It did just clear up on its own, after plenty of neurofen and tlc

This is going to sound like complete scare-mongering... but only yesterday A friend was telling about her son who got meningitus in his hip. 11 months old, had a sore hip cried whenever it was moved. He had rash on his tummy, sometimes rash on his hands, too. Cold hands & feet but very warm affected leg all supposed to be signs of meningitus. GP didn't know what it was, hospital kept shrugging, even after some ultrasounds. It took nearly a week to diagnose, after a joint-fluid sample was taken finally. Many bouts of strong antibiotics to cure.

All of which is to say if your DD comes up with any sort of funny rash, don't hesitate to make a big fuss.

Thanks for the warning Zebra. Fortunately by Monday the worst seemed over and the anti-inflammatory painkillers sem to have done the trick. Will keep my eyes open to the possibility of it recurring though especially with any rash.

What gets me is that it supposed to have been so common, according to the paediatrician anyway, yet as you can see we only have one positive response so far!

Oh gosh,I wonder if that's what it could have been that my dd had the other week. Her ankle swelled up and was purple, blue and red.She had funny red spots above it all the way up her leg.It was warm as well and sore.No one knew what it was,x ray all clear and it's still a mystery as it slowly disappeared of it's own accord. We were told to go back if it got worse, which it didn't it stayed the same. They were baffled and said whatever it was it was very rare.Even arthritis was mentioned.I wonder.
