Would you go to the doctor if you had lost your voice?

I had the virus that has been going round about 2.5 weeks ago now and went back to work after a week .... I thought I was getting better but 3 days ago I lost my voice. I don't really have a sore throat (only when I try to speak for any length of time) ... would you go to the doctor or is there nothing they can do for things like this?

...and say what? (Presumably you'd mime it?)

Seriously, losing your voice is very common after the recent cold virus. It will come back. There is nothing anyone can do but if you don't try and talk for a few days it should clear.

Hope you feel better soon

No, not worth going. I lose my voice once a year and it just comes back. Cant imagine what they could do to help.

rest it (ie don't force your voice), drink lots of fluids, and inhale steam.
If you haven't got it back in a few weeks, or you're losing your voice regularly, then prob the time to go.

good .. thats what I wanted to hear as I am sure it would be a nightmare getting an appointment! Thanks. I can't remember losing my voice for more than a day or so before and after 3 days and no sign of improvement I just wondered how long it would take to reappear!

I almost always lose my voice with every coldandcough I get its just inflamed vocal cords usually (if not painful) honey and lemon warmdrinks and suckplain sweets to keep your throat lubricated.

Unless you lose it for weeks on end, then I would go. Otherwise no point IME.

Nothing a GP could do about it.

The people we want to see with lost voices or hoarseness are the ones who have had it for over 6 weeks.

Rest your voice (no shouting), warm drinks, steam and be patient- it will come back.

thanks everyone ... dont normally drink hot drinks so will try and tempt myself with something. I certainly couldn't shout even if I tried so should be ok with that one! I can barely summon a whisper!
