Had a baby by C-section almost 4 months ago and am back on the pill. Ive noticed that just after ive had my period and particularly after sex, my bits smell. This is my 1st baby - is this normal?? Is it ever normal to be fishy?? Its only for a about a wk!! No obvious signs of thrush or anything? Or jumping madly to conclusions has my dp been messing about & given me an std!!

Sounds like a bacterial imbalance type of thing Ribs. Try getting some probiotic capsules from a health food shop, soften a couple under warm running water and shove up the fanjo once or twice a day when this happens. Probably sensible to see your GP (or visit local GUM clinic) to rule out anything sinister first, just to be on safe side

Sounds plausible. Il c if theres something online, really dont fancy going into local health food shop asking for probiotic fanjo tablets!!

nooo they're not fanjo tablets - they're the ones you take orally. I had a recurring infection, got sick of taking antibiotics, and the probiotics cleared it up really quickly

could bebacterial vaginosis- usually in older women, due to dry vagina and bacteria invading (??) but could be due to low hormones post preg.

Go see your GP- or FPC nurses- wouldn't recommend putting anything in there- cept the usual things! - til you find out what is going on.
Don't be shy- just make that appt.! Meanwhile, don't wash with soap etc- just plain warm water and weat loose cotton knickers etc etc.

Crikey!!
Going to see health visitor later, can they prescribe anything? Wil poss not mention it and wait & see dr if room full of other people tho!!

Doubt if HV can prescribe- you would need a swab etc to check bugs, most likely.

backalleysally · 29/12/2008 14:41

It sounds like Bacterial Vaginosis. it can be tested for quite easily. And can be cleared up with a course of antibiotics. Its not an STD.

I agree that it's best to get it checked out by a doctor. If it is BV you will be prescribed antibiotics - usually a single big dose of metronidazole (iirc). This will work but it doesn't stop it from coming back again, and I don't know about you, but antibiotics almost always give me thrush, which is just as bad as blimmin BV. The probiotic method is cheap, less harmful than antibiotics (in the sense that there isn't the risk of thrush - they work to rebalance the bacteria), doesn't need a prescription and clears the condition up within a few days.
