Anyone else ever taken a double dose of Cerazette every day?

Have been advised to do this by GP to stop the amount of bleeding I'm getting but tbh am dubious about putting this amount of hormones into my body. He won't let me switch pills because of my age

I know that in some cases depending on weight (ie for heavier women) doctors can prescribe 2 tablets per day (dont know if that applies in your case though :

I had bleeding with femulen and micronor mini-pills and ended up on cerazette and havent bled for a year. Could you not try a different mini-pill first?

from netdoctor:

Also, if you?re significantly overweight (and particularly if you?re over 11 stone ? that?s 70 kg), the POP may not be effective enough for you.

If you?re determined to try the POP, then Cerazette would probably be your best choice. Alternatively, a few doctors are willing to prescribe two mini-Pills per day for larger women. But very big people (over, say, 16-and-a-half stone ? that?s 105 kg) really shouldn?t try the mini-Pill at all in my view, because the risks of falling pregnant are probably too great.

An attack of diarrhoea or vomiting can also prevent the mini-Pill from working effectively.

well I'm 8.5 stone and under 5ft so I'm not exactly a giant or overweight.....Doc seemed relucatant to change pill as he said this was the safest because of my age (40)

according to the previous link there are 4 groups of mini-pills and if one doesnt suit you you should try a different one. Age shouldnt make a difference as they are all mini-pills anyway (I am 35 btw and changed to cerazette about a year ago after problems with previous mini-pills)

Group 1 (both identical)

Micronor, Noriday.

Group 2 Femulen. Group 3 Norgeston. Group 4 (the newest)

Cerazette.

I have this and have a lot of bleeding, period every 2 weeks at least. DH not amused. Haven't heard of double dosage though.

NotsoHoHoHO · 20/12/2008 09:39

I am a similar size and weight as you. I did nothing but bleed, bleed, bleed when I tried this pill.I tried the double dose too but it didnt help and I just gave up in the end. It puzzled me why I had this reaction, as my periods are naturally very regular and fairly light.

NotsoHoHoHO · 20/12/2008 09:40

PS. I am 42 and was your age when I tried it too.

I tried Cerazette and didn't get on with it at all. The bleeding wasn't a problem, but I bloated out and couldn't wear half my clothes for 4 months! The doc changed me onto Femulen, also a mini pill, and this has been better. I'm 40 btw.

Cerazette works in a different way to standard POPs. Conventional POPs can be double-dosed for problematic bleeding or in heavier patients, but this isn't recommended or licensed with cerazette.

The dose of hormone in 2 cerazette tablets is still negligable compared to depo, but a higher dose is unlikely to stop the bleeding.

Swapping to a different POP should be OK, but COCP may be off-limits due to other medical factors (age alone shouldn't limit this as an option).

I bled on and off loads on Cerazette (was in my early 20s), think say a 4-6 day medium bleed up to 3 x per month. I came off it to ttc, and the major symptom on stopping was all day debilitating nausea (just like my pg sickness I later discovered!) for 3 weeks. I also had a longer bleed (7-10 days IIRC) immediately after stopping Cerazette. Normal periods resumed within about 5 weeks. Hth

Pylonic - I stopped taking cerazette about 3 weeks ago because of the constant bleeding. At the point I decided to stop taking it I had been bleeding heaviliy for 4 weeks. The bleeding slowed a couple of days after stopping and ceased completely after about 10 days. I have now been bleed free for a whole week. Yay. Just waiting to see what my natural periods are like when they return as they were hell on earth before hence going on mini pill in the first place.
