Cut big toenail too short and toe is now swollen, red and sore,.... can I take DS's unfinished penicillin?

Sorry if I have grossed you out! But it so sore! I have soaked it in the bath and then put a plaster with some savlon on it to try and make it feel a bit better.

But i think that it may be infected and I'm pressuming that pencillin should make it get a bit better - weekend tommorrow - no doctors - so would taking DS's unfinished liquid orange penicillin be effective in clearing it up...?

Not a good idea, I think. Keep it clean, and phone NHS direct for advice. Any walk-in clinics in your area?

LilRedWG · 12/12/2008 23:25

Go to a hobble walk in clinic tomorrow if no better.

Don't take drugs prescribed for someone else (and I'll say it gently 'casue someone else may rip your head off about it, but - why didn't DS finish his ABs, cause unless a doctor has told him not to, he really should. Sorry - nosy lecture over.)

feedthegoat · 12/12/2008 23:26

Should your ds have unfinished antibiotics? Thought these things always said must complete full course even if symptoms go. I wouldn't just take random meds.

LilRedWG · 12/12/2008 23:26

Ibuprofen will help take down any inflamation and help with pain too. Hope it's better soon.

SilentMNight · 12/12/2008 23:26

I agree, not a good idea, you should see a doc yourself if you think it's infected.

but the penecillin will probably help

bran · 12/12/2008 23:27

No, never take someone else's anti-biotics. In fact never take anything other than a full course of anti-biotics that have been specifically prescribed for the particular condition that you have. It's socially irresponsible and annoying to do anything else as it leads to resistant strains of bacteria.

I know that he should've proably finished them - but he was better in a day and so we kind of forgot to - bad mother I know!

I am going on holiday tommorrow - to the US - and so thats why I am being a bit desperate in thinking of finishing up DS's penicillin! No time in the morning to get to a walk in centre etc ...

Why do these things always happen at the weekend - toe only started hurting tonight at about 8pm - ish....

no no no!
All anti bs should be finished anyway or you then build up a resistance and they might not work again, and each anti b is for a different problem.

go to the drs- infected toe nails can be horrible- my daughter had to have a couple of weeks of anti bs to get rid of her ingrowing toe-nail infection. If you don't get it cleared up, worst case is removal of nail- ouch!- so go and see dr and get it sorted.
