I would call NHS direct on 08454647
I've always found them really helpful and will reassure you before the night.

have you tried cooling him with tepid water? stripping him down to vest?

Or call your local out of hours service. Mine is good and you get to speak to a real nurse very quickly who assesses what help you need. Often with children that is sufficient but they will either send round a GP or make you an appointment at the out of hours centre. I find it a lot better than the bloody script reading nurses on nhs direct who take you through the whole "are the breathing" rigmarole when you are ringing about how to treat a really bad cold/ear infection/ cut finger.
