Shit shit shit shit shit!

One of my best friends is 17 weeks pregnant and has appendicitis - they are operating tomorrow.

Please give me positive experiences, or at least keep her and her baby in your thoughts tonight.

Positive thoughts here.

MrsMerryHenry · 09/12/2008 21:01

My MIL had one back in the 1950s. Her daughter is alive and well, and so is she.

Best of luck to your friend±

constancereader · 09/12/2008 21:02

I think it is generally only really risky to the baby up to 12 weeks - I know someone who had her appendix out at 16 weeks and was fine.

VirginBoffinMum · 09/12/2008 21:21

I asked about anaesthetic at the ANC recently in relation to something else, and they said they did appendix operations all the time. I don't think it's that big a deal. Certainly better than a burst appendix!

LilRedWG · 09/12/2008 21:25

Thank you so much.

She is on high dose antibiotics tonight and they have said it'll be a decent size incision to allow them room to manoeuvre. They have warned her that it is a possibility that she may lose the baby but that she must have the op.

hope all goes well

i think Miaou had an appendectomy during pregnancy and was fine.

fingers crossed xx

VirginBoffinMum · 10/12/2008 10:20

Mother's life has to come first. However I am sure they will have done many of these ops successfully.

randomxmas · 10/12/2008 10:21

hope they'll both be ok xxx

TheBlonde · 10/12/2008 10:23

Piffle had one - I don't think it was a great experience but her LO is running around now

LilRedWG · 10/12/2008 11:01

Thanks for your kind thoughts and reassurances.

I've spoken to the ward this morning and she is, "fine". Obviously they can't tell me more.

We text each other lots last night but I haven't heard from her this morning, so I'm hoping that she's getting some much needed rest.

OP posts:
Piffle · 10/12/2008 11:06

I had it at 22 weeks. Was crap. No decent drugs and painful but my son was fine.
She needs to take precious care and rest properly
Wishing her well x x x tis bloody scary to go through, I was terrified but midwife and obgyn came down post surgery to do Doppler and reassure me. Plus they approved an anti vomit drug which I really needed, but ward doctor wouldnot approve.

LilRedWG · 10/12/2008 11:09

Thank you Piffle. Sorry it was so crap for you, but I'm glad that your DS is fine.

I will make sure that she takes good care of herself when she is home.

Piffle · 10/12/2008 12:45

makes a diff how sick you are prior to op though.
I was nearly ruptured and was seriously unwell. Temp, shakes, losing consciousness etc
I was very lucky to have surgeon that I did!
Hope your friend is comfy today

Guadalupe · 10/12/2008 12:49

I had surgery for an ectopic pregnancy when I was six weeks pregnant with ds1. He was fine. They didn't tell me there was a risk but then of course they thought they were removing the pregnancy.

I hope your friend recovers well.

LilRedWG · 10/12/2008 16:57

Just spoken to friend. They've not operated as they are now not sure if it's appendictis.

OP posts:
Piffle · 10/12/2008 19:42

They usually diagnose appendicitis by ruling out other stuff
App. Gets acute quickly so if she is not worse then unlikely to be appendicitis.
Hope it's ok
Fwiw I ignored my pain for
24 hrs presuming it was wind.
Until vomiting and high temp that is!
Glad friend is ok x

LilRedWG · 15/12/2008 22:05

Just an update. My friend was discharged a couple of days ago. They have no idea what's wrong and have told her to call if pains return/get worse.

Thanks for the info and support.

Just seen this - glad your friend's OK. LilRedWG. The reason I dropped by is I had an appendectomy when pg with DD2, though was 31 weeks, which is safer. It was, as Piffle says, pretty crap but better than a rupture.

As an aside, I had had unexplained stomach pains during my pg with DD1, which they now think was a grumbling appendix.
