Sore vulva

Not me (I wouldn't post in my name if it was!) but my dd who is nearly 5. She has been getting it periodically for about a year or so. It isn't a big deal - just a red bottom - and it seems to be treated well enough with Sudocrem, but I wondered if anyone else's dd got this and what caused it. Is she not wiping herself properly after a wee, do you think?

Does she wipe front to back or back to front?

My dd gets this ocasionally too. I think it is cos she wipes too hard, and i have told her to be more gentle but she still does it.

I have found sudocrem clears it up pretty quickly too.

apparently it is very common in young girls...so our Doctor says. DD also gets this, think it is just to do with personal hygiene.

yes, dd gets this...canestan does the job here. was worried sudocrem would kill important bacteria, but don't know why cos used when she was in nappies

Oh goodness knows Hunkermunker! She barely wipes at all, either front or back and I have no idea in which direction. I can't believe I have failed so completely with this issue but everytime I see her wipe herself (not often) I tell her AGAIN how to do it properly. Do you suppose a lot of 4/5 year olds don't wipe properly?

yes, i put it down to poor wiping skill

I would think it's pretty common for 4/5 year olds not to wipe themselves very well - I know if you wipe back to front, you can transfer germs (iyswim )

And don't be daft - you haven't failed! She'll learn to do it soon, I'm sure.

If you are using bubblebath then stop. I found a difference when my DD just bathed in water. I only use it for her now and again.

Oh it is just that my 8 and 7 year old ds's also don't wipe their bottoms properly and I suppose from that that I never explained it properly to them.

I thought I'd taught dd how to wipe, but when I picked her up from nursery and she wanted a wee, had to watch her scrubbing herself(literally) with the paper. Back to the drawing board for us, too!

I use Johnson's Moisturising Bath in the bath water because she bathes with her younger brother and I have always used it since one of my older boys had dry skin (also it cuts down on the watermark around the bath and they all love playing with the bubbles.) Johnson's - as used by most midwives Mears! Should I stop do you think?

Yes very common in little girls I would agree. I think it also might be the case that soreness is caused by dirty hands often ending up in that direction and causing minor irritation.. as well as the wiping issue. Personally (IMHO) I tend to use sudocreme or something similar first.. see if that helps.. before I go onto to Canesten because sudocreme does not have an active ingredient so is gentler. If it persists, just a little tiny bit of canesten always does the job.

Oh yes, I have noticed dd playing with herself on occasions. That could be the cause although sometimes I think she is fiddling with herself because she is sore rather than the other way round. Crikey, in a few years time she would hate me to know I was giving away these details about her!

I'm pretty sure that Johnson's caused my dd's eczema- it cleared up as soon as we stopped using the effing stuff! Seriously, midwives (well some midwives) are recommending that you don't use anything in the bath these days. Detergent can change the pH of the vagina, and cause infections. Why not make bubbles a Sunday night treat?

Yes I would stop for a few days and see what happens. And Johnson's is at it by the way - midwives do not recommend their products cheeky beggars
