So worried that I will be sick

IllegallyBrunette · 01/12/2008 18:36

Got up this morning with the snuffles which wasn't entirly unexpected as ds has just had a cold.

The my stomach started to feel a bit odd, but that also isn't unusual as I have IBS. Went to the loo a couple of times and so took an imodium.

Anyway, felt ok until about half hour after lunch. I feel like I am getting a cold, but also feel slightly sick.

If I have a cold thats fine I don't care, but I am absolutly terrified of having another sickness bug. I had one last xmas that wiped me out for weeks. I was sick non stop for hours, and had to ring my mum to come and help me get up off the floor and into bed. She then had to stay over for a couple of days, and basically took over everything.

It was months before I felt normal again because I felt constantly anxious that someone would be ill again.

I don't want to be ill.

I have been avoiding the thread because it sometimes makes me worse, but I have this phobia too (emetaphobia) and there are loads of us under the mental health thread. You will get loads of support on there.

I personally reckon if you were gonna be sick it would have happenned by now but I really can understand your anxiety. Its a terrible feeling x

Hi Illegally Brunette - no advice really but just wanted to say sorry that you are feeling so poorly

I get a bit panicky when I feel ill (particularly when my dh is travelling) so I can understand how you are feeling.

It's very unlikely that you will have the same bug as last year but if you have caught something, there is nothing you can really do about it except drink lots of fluid, maybe take a supplement, eat some fresh pineapple (good at warding off bugs in early stages) and get to bed early ...easy to say, but worrying will make everything seem worse.

In the meantime, can you ring a friend or watch a favourite DVD or do some sort of calming activity/craft to distract yourself (a candelit bath works for me every time!).

Btw, are you specifically worried about the vomiting? If so, the anxiety you describe could be emetophobia and there are a couple of support threads on here that could help you.

Hope you feel better soon x

Oh you are probably (hopefully) right.

Colds do tend to make me feel a bit sickly so it isn't unusual, I think it is just because I know there are a few bugs going around, and infact a local primary school closed for two days last week to try and stop the sick bug in it's tracks.

I think I am hungry but i'm scared to eat anything now.

Am supposed to be doing a craft day at the kids school tommorow all day . Have just rung xp to tell him he might have to stand in for me.

Oh feeling hungry is a good sign! Could you eat a cracker or two to stop you getting that empty/sick feeling?

A bit of lucozade or flat coke can sometimes help too.

Take care of yourself.

SleighGirl · 01/12/2008 18:47

I'm mid cold virus but it started off with 24 hours of stomach churning, wasn't sick but tummy was a bit out of sorts & I felt a bit queasy on & off IYSWIM. Hopefully that's all it is for you.

Mercy · 01/12/2008 18:48

You poor thing

Ok, what you need to do is wash your hands every hour (ditto the dc) just in case (a friend who is a senior nurse told me that)

Clean the loo handle and any door handles leading into/out of the toilet. Change the handtowel regularly.

Good luck, I'm sure you will be fine !

How's your temperature?

IllegallyBrunette · 01/12/2008 18:49

I'm not sure if it is specifically the vommiting, although i think possibbly it is.

Before last year, I was always pretty laid back about bugs, as i'd only ever had the throw up twice/ 24 hour kind, but last years scared me half to death as it was so uncontrolable, and I am not sure if it is the feeling out of control again that is scaring me or the actual vomitting.

Both dd's are out at brownies/guides, but as soon as they get back at 9 I am going to go to bed.

Ahh will do those things now Mercy.

Not sure about temp, will see if i can find the thingy.

I feel absolutly freezing.

Totally rational fear in my view! I hate that out of control feeling too ...

Forgot about the washing hands thing Mercy! (Rather an obvious one to forget) I've got Dettol hand wash dispensers near every sink in the house at the moment ...

Hope you have a good night's sleep IB!

SleighGirl · 01/12/2008 18:52

Did you have novo virus last time, it is truly hellish & memorable - I will never forget it & we had it mildly.

Mercy · 01/12/2008 18:53

Last year and earlier this year there was a particulary nasty d&v bug going round (the whole family took it in turns to get it, ds and I had it worse but of course dh took to his bed )

It might not be the same thing (fingers crossed)

IllegallyBrunette · 01/12/2008 18:55

I think it might of been that yes Sleighgirl as it was so nasty.

Thankfully non of my kids caught it from me which i was so grateful for.

I lost 1 stone in 24 hours and lived on Coke for about 2 weeks afterwards.

IllegallyBrunette · 01/12/2008 18:56

Will try and find something to have to eat, even if it is only dry toast.

I came down with a cold on Saturday pm and felt a bit sicky on Sunday, which is unlike me, still have the cold, but sicky feeling has gone.

Hopefully just a cold!

IllegallyBrunette · 01/12/2008 19:07

Hopefully yes, will keep my fingers crossed. Am too busy this month to be ill.

A couple of weeks worth of echinacea can help your immune system.

If you get desparate then guarana tablets etc can get you through the day (pricey but worth it)

IllegallyBrunette · 02/12/2008 09:16

Thanks all. I wasn't sick but have woken up this morning with a raging headache, sore throat and ear ache, but I can cope with that.

Have had to send xp to the kids xmas craft day which I felt really guilty about, but the kids didn't seem to mind.
