OWWWWWWWWW ! How long will this hurt?? I knew it was going to hurt but I wasn't expecting it to hurt as much as this!! People keep asking me if the hole feels really big -but I am so swollen I can't get my tongue as far back as the hole. My cheeks and gums are so swollen I can't close my teeth together properly and I need more painkillers than I am allowed to take. There seem to be so many stitches too..right forward near my eye teeth??

I look like a hamster - really I do - it's not a joke - and I am going green where the bruising is coming out - all over my cheek and down my neck even..

Is this NORMAL or should I go back and see someone??

ring your own dentist - i had 2 out last year and htought it would hurt but 5 days on it was just getting worse, i was maxing out on allthe drugs i could get my hand son washed down with brandy ! ( something iw ould never reccommend to my pateints) eventually called the dentist who saw me and took the stiches out and a huge amount of pus poured out - the relief was enormas

DrNortherner · 01/12/2008 14:55

Go back definatley. I had all 4 out and was in agony for days and days. Turned out I had dry sockets, common in women on the pill apparantly, where the holes do not clot or heal so you are left with a big gaping hole.

I needed stronger pian killers and some gross antiseptic stuff shoving in the holes.

Poor you. Hope you feel better soon.

Oh bloody Hell. Pus pouring out? That was the reason they took it out in the first place. It didn't hurt but it was oozing pus. I'm on antibiotics too so can't wash painkillers down with booze ( although you are right this works a treat for a bad back!)

It's day 4 now - how long SHOULD it take to start feeling better then? My normal dentist only works on Wednesdays.

start shovelling down arnica capsules too. I would see the emergency dentist.

mummydoc · 01/12/2008 15:12

the problem with mine was the pus was trapped in by hte stiches - once released the pain settled really quickly and i was on antibiotics too but often wont stop an infection and once the pus is there there is only one way for it to go - out - def call your dentist surgery they will have someone on duty

marge2 · 01/12/2008 15:23

Oh Yuk!!

..but how long should it normally take to feel better if there is no pus stuck behind stitches?

mine took over 2wks, but I had all 4 out at once under a general.

no idea how long it should take for one, altho flame had a tooth out recently and it took her about 1wk to recover IIRC, and then it still kept bleeding for a few more days on top of that.

jujumaman · 01/12/2008 15:30

God, you poor thing that sounds horrendous

I had one out a couple of weeks ago and even though it was a bit tender for a week afterwards I experienced nothing like what you're going through.

Call whoever did it and ask to see them again asap.

Thanks everyone. Looking at my neck again - it's gone green right down the front to my collar bones. He must have really been leaning on me! Off to take loads more drugs now!!

Will try to get hold of a dentist tomorrow.

how are you doing today?

scampadoodle · 02/12/2008 17:00

I didn't have stitches when I had a wisdom tooth out but even so I was in a lot of pain for at least a week. Even though the tooth had been giving me permanent mouth ulcers, for that week I really regretted having it out! Then it stopped hurting & it was fine. get it checked if you're worried though. Some of the tales on here are gruesome!
